There are two levers by the northern entrance. One controls the direction that the machine points; the other causes it to shoot forth a bolt. There's also a single, movable mirror outside the northern entrance, which you'll want to turn at some point. Adjusting it helps shoot a bolt at a door which has a lightning symbol on it; that unlocks the door.
Be sure to try most of the machine's positions, although you should avoid the western one--as I recall, that shoots a bolt back at the machine, causing it to damage. (If that happens, you can get it fixed in the game room.)

When you click on the doors, it will tell you something like L-North R-North.
In the room where the three doors are, you will see a big dial on the floor. Go to the left side of the dial and turn it until it points north. Then go to the right side of the dial and turn it until it points north again. The doors should open.

I only went did about 5 levels before deciding it wasn't worth using up all my healing potions on. It does reward you with items, some of which I've heard are useful in a part of Fellwood later on. Maybe next run through I'll try to do them all.Originally posted by HighLordDave

How do you complete the tests? Do you just beat all 10 levels? What do you get? Do you have to do the levels in one sitting or can you come back later? Do you have to do them in order?

What's the deal with Nickedamus [sic]? I've offered to do him a favour in return for the entity's true name, but every time I go see him about it, he says, "Not yet. Soon." (or something like that)
Will he ever collect? I just started Chapter 4 and am entering the Black Raven Monastary.
