Ice Palace help

How do you initiate combat in the combat room? I pulled all the levers and nothing happens. Am I missing something?

How do you open the door above where you have to kill the caged one?

Answer 1:
Pull the two levers first to initiate battle mode.
Select a rank.
Activate.
Choose a square.
Wait for your other party members to be removed.
Wait for your opponent.
Fight!

Answer 2:
There is a hidden door. Open it and then use the electric rod thing.
