Lamentations of a Mouse Clicker

Post by DraySkullan »

While rolling up my Cavalier that I am using in The Darkest Day, I was overzealous in my mouse clicking and let an 18/00, yes an 18/00 Str fly right by. I ended up accepting an 18/86. Just thought I would share that.

If I asked, would you answer? Its your problem. Its a deep, deep problem. I have no way to ask about that... I have no elegant way of stepping into your heart without tracking in filth. So I will wait. Someday, when you want to tell me, tell me then. -Bleach

how many other stat points you have also determines your power. keep that in mind. also there are items to increase your strength to be above 18/00.

Edit: oh yeah ctrl shift 8 does work, after that I take away some points from my guy to make him more reasonable.
Remember, being Evil in Baldur's Gate 2 is VERY fun...

I use cntrl shift 8 also. I take away a good amount to make it reasonable, but I dont see any harm in it because afterall, id just spend 30 minutes rolling until I got the values I wanted to anyways.

What sucks about Control+Shift+8 is that when you use it on non-warriors, they get Strength 18/100 as well. That's not by the rules, so I am forced to drop all non-warrior Strengths to 17...

Yeah but that isnt a big deal. Things that modify strength come easily and plentiful.

I never did those stat-raising things... seems very non-rp to me.

Why is it non -rp??

I think raising stats, or making them like you want, isnt wrong.

Lemme point it this way: I dont role the stats, I edit them with SK........why??
Because I put the stats like I think I really am. So this means I never have strenght 18, cause im just not that strong. Strenght 14 is more my stat. But then dexternity is high for me again.

You see, I just make the stats like I think I am in real life, now isnt that RP??

Then again with proficiencies.......when I play, for example, a Ranger, I put instead of 2 * in longsword maybe 4........why??

Again, when you would live in that time, would u just quit when you reached 2 *??

I wouldnt, I would continue specialising in longsword untill I die, so why just have 2 stars when its obvious you can be a 4 * longsword wielder????

I dont care about the limitations and all........I just put things like I really am, with stats, proficienies and also armor. I wouldnt take a (full) plate mail because I dont like it and it isnt my style....this way I allways have leather or chain, or nothing......

U get my point?? It isnt about "cheating" with stats and so on, it is just how I/it would be in "real life".

First of all. Role-playing is exactly as the name suggests. Playing a role. Playing as yourself is not "Role-Playing"

Role-playing, true ADD style, would be rolling once and taking what you got. Ive done it before (once all the way through).

Secondly, as to it being "un-roleplaying like"

What about sitting there rolling stats for 30 minutes until you got 90 points to distribute? I mean, essentially, thats what you would do. Or take a shortcut, cntrl shift 8, and only use 80 to 90 points. Same thing

Thirdly. Ive beaten this game a ridiculous number of times. I dont roleplay very often anymore. I did the first time i played. The first time I did evil. A few more times with different party memebers and classes.

But ive beaten the horse. Its dead. No not merely dead, decomposed. A skeleton.

So I dont roleplay that much anymore. I dont "powergame" per say. I never use cheese tactics (battles are easy enough as is) I dont go for the most uber possible character. I still maintan a loose framework of a personnality and alignment. But I dont always take Imoen anymore (rarely in fact), I usually dont give a damn about trying to finish the romances, I often ignore my strongholds (like the keep and thieves guild), etc etc. These things have just lost their flavor.

But all this is pointless. Until you tell me that you play all your games off of the first die roll, anything you say is hypocritical. Because if you reroll for better stats, then you are just like anyone else who skips that part and just gives them the stats theyd roll for anyways.

(Ironically enough, the character im playing now I didnt shift cntrl 8. I usually roll a few times so I can get a % strength (because 18/00 does feel like cheating so I always go down to 17) and got enough for these stats
18/93, 19, 17, 13, 10, 8
which is normally what I shot for as a archer type character (fighter/thief this game), because I loved Kivan in bg1 and thats one of my favorite "types" of characters to play)

Since when is it "true AD&D" to roll once and take what you get? The Dungeon Masters Guide (or every one that I have used) gives you several examples of ways to roll up a character. The straight roll, roll 4d6 drop the lowest, etc. (Even more in the Unearthed Arcana) It encourages you to pick the method that makes the game the most fun for you, or more importantly the way your DM decides, since ultimately it's his decision. Roll playing has nothing to do with playing a random character, it's about taking the character an playing his strengths, weaknesses, and personality to the best of your ability.

Whenever I distribute stat points, I almost always just roll a max of three times.
What I meant was in big terms that I dislike powergaming.
I make a char and decides his characteristica, then I distribute the points.

When I make my character like I am..........I am not powergaming, I just like a character and his stats like I would be......
That gives me the most fun out a game.

And since when is making a character like yourself powergaming or "not role-playing"?

Well, by definition roleplaying means assuming the persona and characteristics of someone else. Playing 'yourself' is almost...autobiographical?? ;)

But hell, its still hardly power gaming. And it is your game which you shelled out hard earned cash for, so play it anyway you feel happy with.
