It's Not Easy Being a Paladin

Post by DraySkullan »

I'm playing the game for a 2nd time, this time with TDD, and this time I'm playing my other favorite class, the paladin. It's alot of fun to play from the paladin perspective. I roleplay paladins very strictly, and some of the choices you have to make are kind of troubling. Working with the Shadow Thieves for one. You have a choice of working with them, or a vampire, and while the Thieves are obviously the lesser of two evils, it's still something a paladin would hate to do. Saving Viconia, who is evil, is another grey area. While you should save her from being executed by evil fanatics, she is also evil. Another is the Korgan quest. If memory serves me, you have to take him with you in order to complete it, but a true paladin would not travel with evil unless it was a matter of life and death, and retrieving the book is not. So I'm pretty much probably not gonna do that quest. I'm sure there are other situations in BG2 which are tough for paladins that I cant think of right now. Who else has roleplayed a paladin through the game? Share your experiences with tough paladin situations, and how did you handle them?

Deciding whether or not to hold the lady hostage in the graveyard live-burial quest in order to get the Silver Pantaloons. Or for that matter, in BG1, sweet-talking your way into getting the Gold Pantaloons in the first place.

I decided to do the right thing in both situations and release the lady and be honest to the noble. Besides, I'm not too big a fan of the Big Metal Unit anyway; I'm too much a purist, I'm afraid.

I hate the Big Metal Unit, because it's so big. I would love it if it were a little smaller!

Its not nessecarily true a paladain would not travel with "evil" in order to achieve a greater good. Dont have such a narrow conception of "good".

However, I paladin would always look to other alternatives provided they were there (and there are other npcs that are good so no luck there).

Further why are you doing the book of Kaza quest anyways? A paladin would never go on a treasure hunt just for profit.

The Shadow Thieves aren't really "evil". Obviously some of them are but in general they are mostly just excitement seekers or swashbucklers.

But the bottum line is they are thiefs and they steal from people, this alone should be enogh to set any self respaecting paladin off.

I just think this way: should I help these people kill vampires and eliminate lots of dying in guild wars, as well as rescuing Imoen, or should I just let the bloody war continue, let Imoen rot, and have the city live in terror of vampires, instead of siding with the shadow thieves? Rhetorical question.

this is were the game is lacking, you could also have been apraoched from the govermant and then been assigned to get rid of the guid war and as a reward they send you to spell hold. thsi being the good way, thief neutral nad vampire evil. There would ofcourse be a choise and not a check due to your aligment.

i think this is a good idea for any modder who wants to do this.....

Well, I actually said it's something he wouldnt do UNLESS there was a greater good involved. My concept of good is just fine thanks. :D Korgan is the only NPC you can complete the book of Kaza quest with. The motivation is to raise money to rescue Imoen, not profit. Like I said, it's one of many things that would be a grey area for a paladin.

But a true paladin should look for other alternatives like freeing trade meet or somesuch...
