The worst things about Baldur's Gate

Post by Obike Fixx »

What do you think is the worst thing about Baldur's Gate and\or Tales of The Sword Coast?

I definately think that it's that the monsters\beasts reappear, Aaagrhh! I just HATE it, it's so frustrating. You have just killed a band of sirenes, the second after you killed them, THEY REAPPEAR! And kill you! AAARGH!

Anyway, what do YOU "pointing finger at YOU" Think is the worst?

The endless uninteresting uneventful, wildlife areas. It's a nice concept, but there are to many of them wich doesn't involve any quests.

BTW Mikael, empty your PM inbox. :)

The lack of portable containers. This isn't a problem in party games but soloing is a pain when you can't carry all the items you loot. This is especially annoying in the Cloakwood mines where making multiple trips means getting hit by at least 2 random encounters.

I think the wilderness areas are far from the worst part of BG, when I first started playing I would wander around in the woods for days. There are two things I don't like about BG. 1 certain classes(mages) only get one quick weapon slot, and 2 you can't pause while in inventory, but when you look at the map you stop moving.

What's the problem with the wilderness areas? I mean, it's not like you have to go there or anything...

Exactly... if you don't want the bountiful XP they provide then just stick to the main storyline and don't do any other quests. Personally I'd get a little bored.

Yeah, I liked the wilderness areas; they gave more of a sense of adventure.

The only thing I'd say was wrong with BG1 is that there was no implementation of dual-wielding. It puzzles me to this day why they simply could not implement it in any IE game until BG2. My ranger felt so naked without a second sword.

Definitely the lack of containers. The rest of the game is perfection. Yes, even the respawning :) .

Oh the path finding... :(

Some of those inns in Beregost with loads of people wandering around, boxing your characters in...grrr.

The creatures spawning every time you reload, and respawning if you've glimpsed their presence. Even hobgoblins get difficult if their's 24000 of them.

The worst thing is the resolution. I played BG2 first, and going to BG1 was terrible, I hated it when I would be getting hit by arrows from an unknown source off the screen. The graphics were good for their time, but poor compared to BG2 and stuff now. I personally did not like the wilderness areas, but they did add a sense of adventure. I did not like having to travel through an area to get to the next one, you know how you can just skip around in bg2? but I guess it does make a lot more sense that way.

I wish it highlighted containers when you press 'Tab', like in BG2. I hate having to scroll over everything to find out if its a container or not....

stop comparing it to BG2! Its an older game of course minor conveniences and things will be better in BG2. The wilderness areas are what I LOVED about BG. And travelling from area to area the old fashioned way totally immersed me in the game world (more so than BG2). I personally dont play BG or any of its sequels for graphics so that doesnt bother me one bit. Someone mentioned that they hated how there was no 2 weapon fighting, well no offence but you are a dumb dumb :) BG uses 2E rules (which doesnt include dual wielding!). The rules for 2 weapon fighting did not exist at the time of BGs creation. Pathfinding could of been better but you get used it after a while

All of the rules that were around for BG2 were around when BG was made, they just decided to take only what they needed.
