No, you don't have to go to them. You do get some items, but nothing special.

Btw BloodMist, you don't have to go to them.

Why not go there?
I always go everywhere, and do all the quests.
But their the most-non-profitable places in BG2-SoA but still worth it.!
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

I agree, but HE might be lazy or something like that.
:) He could also have some other reason to hurry, but I can't see why either.

But to awnser you're questions, there is a great bow in one of the area's and some other magic stuff.
Also every area has a quest (IIRC), and you also can meet some old friends from BG1 there.
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

Well..... The elves Teleport you there when you have found the Rhynn Lanthorm. But you don't have to do anything there(besides walking into a tree). :D

Btw, what do you mean when you write "I must have misread it"?

You can save Coran's life in case you remember him from BG1 and if you're fast. Unfortunately he doesn't offer to join you (best BG1 NPC IMHO).

IIRC there's absolutely nothing but scenery in the small teeth pass. It seems Bioware ran out of time while working on those areas.
SPOILER

Two parties attack you in the north forest, but no dialogue, and in the forest of tethyr the Coran quest is simple, as well as for the Mana bow +4 all you need to do is walk in and take it. Not a lot of effort for these things, though the scenery is amazing in the forest of Tethyr.

There are some monsters here and there, but nothing important.

The Darkest Day Mod makes interesting use of this area... there is actually a recruitable NPC with one of the new kits. Aquatic Druid or something like that...
