Fans of Ranger/Clerics please come in

Post by velvetfreak »

I'm not familiar with this class myself, never having played it. But I notice it seems to be a popular multi-class choice. What's the deal? Without the ability to use non-blunt weapons, why not go for a straight Cleric? Without sacrificing AC for studded leather to get Stealth, why not just go for a Fighter/Cleric? If all you're getting is weapon profs and a better THAC0, again why not just go for a Fighter/Cleric?

Is there something the Ranger brings to this multi-class that I'm missing? Any opinions would be appreciated.

The biggest benefit to this class is that you get all druid spells aswell as cleric spells. You also get two slots in dual wield and stealth. AA very good character indeed.

I played throught the original BG with a Ranger/ Cleric. Boy was that a mistake. But the maces and flails in thesequel are a lot better and if you make vampires a racial enemy, you breeze throught a some rought seas so to speak.

So you're saying even the higher levels in the Cleric spellbook include Druid spells? Like Summon Fire Elemental?

@Bruce Lee, I take it you go with studded leather and dual-wield, with a sling for ranged attack...

I have played both ranger dualed to cleric at level 7 and stalker dualed to cleric at level 9. With the stalker I dual wielded clubs and wore shadow dragon scale. Ranger at level 7 was using foa and crom faeyr and wearing armor of the hart. Yes you do get all spells both cleric and druid. The cool thing is that you get many of them. A level 14 druid can memorize very many high level spells but a level 20 cleric can.

Against Trolls: Racial Enemy
Against Undead: Turn Undead
Against Mages: Insect Plague
Against Grunts: Dual-Wield Melee
Against Drow: Sanctuary/Blade Barrier

What more do you need?

@Riverwind: very solid, thanks!

To answer your question with a question: If you were soloing, how would you deal with locks & traps?

@ velvetfreak - Don't tell me you've caught the solo bug too?! :)
To find traps there is always the level 2 Priest spell Find Traps. As for disarming them... You could always summon low level creatures to walk across any floor traps. The ones on chests, drawers, etc. though you'll just have to grit your teeth and take the damage.
Keep us posted on how your solo adventure unfolds. Since it sounds like we're starting at the same time it'll be interesting to see how we do with totally different characters.
Best of luck,

Well, the ranger dualled to cleric doesn't have thief skills, otherwise it would be a perfect soloist--if you want thief skills, go with a swashbuckler dualled to a cleric. However, in addition to "find traps," you can cast "draw upon holy might" to bash open locks, and as far as protection against traps, the ranger dualled to cleric will walk around with "Ironskin" in effect.

I enjoyed Beastmaster dualled to a Cleric. All of the non-metal weapons are useable by clerics anyway, so the cleric weaponry isn't limiting. Only time I really liked the beastmaster kit.

My only problem is that I don't know which stronghold to take any suggestions. Cleric or Ranger. I have done the ranger stronghold before just not the cleric.

[spoilers follow]

There are two versions of the Cleric quest--the full version, which takes a while, and the abbreviated version, which is quick and satisfying.

Here's the abbreviated version:

Go to the temple district, witness the cult evangelism, go to the Temple of Helm for the assignment, go into the sewers through one of the many entrances, leave the first floor of the sewers through the NW exit, go through a few rooms on the second floor to get to the cult compound, attack the two guards, then the Unseeing Eye Beholder shows up, kill the Unseeing Eye Beholder, report back to the Temple of Helm, cleric quest completed.

yesterday i finished bg2 with a stalker/cleric solo , it was pretty easy and i didnt had to remove the xp cap, the most dificult fight i had in all the game was the one with the black dragon in suldanesselar, even the red dragon was easier, the dificults with most of the dragons are the dragon breath, his meelee attacks are very powerful too, with the shadow dragon you can miss these 2 things with the amulet of power(you become imune to level drain) and iron skins, with the red dragon use iron skins and the spells protection fromfire/cold and protection from fire, with the black dragon you cannot be imune to his dragon breath and he destroy the iron skins easyly with insect plague /summon insects so i had to use powerful protection spells like shield of archons , chaotic comands(one the the most usefuls spells in the game) free action , remove fear etc, and i needed to flee many times and use about 10 potions of super healing, even irenicus was easier.

just want to add a note that my stalker /cleric was so powerful that i tested a fight between him and my pure stalker, the stalker/cleric killed him without difficult and without having to use ANY spells like holypower or iron skins
