Stupid demon...

Post by TheHellion »

I'm getting desperate here. I'm in the Underdark, doing that quest to kill the Balor and seal the cave entrance...

I'm getting tossed around like a rag doll. So many times, in fact, that I'm about ready to give that hell-spawn-wannabe-pain-in-my-ass the ol' Ctrl-Q. Here's what I've tried so far:

Keldorn is the man, so I've been having him smack the byatch with Carsomyr. I haste him, use protection from evil, and then wail away. My mistake. I tried using my character's sunfire ability from the Daystar and Aerie's Holy Smite, but the Balor's magic resistance snuffs that out. I even tried having Aerie cast the Magic Resistance spell, but the smart bugger always goes after her first and foremost. She never gets it off, 'cause it takes a long time to cast. My char is an archer, so he's worthless in this situation. I've got Daystar, but the +4 against evil apparently doesn't mean squat. Jaheira's scimitar +2 isn't any good, and neither is Minc's sword of chaos +2. Minc also has the Flail of the Ages, which might hurt the Balor, but he can only hit it with a 20... even Keldorn, with his 1 THACO, needs a 17 or better to hit. Which, I might add, is jacked... the Balor in the Monstrous Manual isn't nearly that powerful. We're talking about AC -16 here... gimme a break.

Any advice?

Free Action is the key. Try the Cleric Spell, Ring of Free Action or Keldorn's personal armor that should help.

Free action hasn't helped so far. Keldorn has his Firecam plate, plus the 50% magic resistance offered by Carsomyr. He still gets nailed by Power Word: Stun. And regardless, the Balor can take Keldorn down with 5 or 6 hits. Anything else I can try?

Have you had Aerie help with the flail? Have her cast Draw on Holy Might, Righteous Magic, Holy Power, and Tensers Transformation. She isn't bad, then.

Don't forget her stoneskins.

I think I used Melf's Minute Meteors on him as well. Can't remember, but it seems like it worked. Not sure if this is right, though.

As already said on this board, the Daystar doesn't really count as a +4 sword. If I remember this fight right, I took out the demon with hordes of Magic Missiles (Edwin+Jan+Haer'Dalis). But he was tough though...

Well, maybe not everyones solution, but what worked for me was transforming into the slayer and shooting all the magic missiles I could lay my hands on (some WILL get past the demons magic resistance damage)

I don't know about you, but I thought that littul demon was not THAT hard to beat. I had Korgan (-14 A.C. at the time, with both my Rings of Gaxx) beat the **** out of him, while the rest casted Magic Missiles or just stood there watching... He was a piece of cake... in HARD difficulty.

If i remember well there is a very simple way of defeating him.... just set many traps all over the room... when the demon appears he dies... it's that simple....

I also don't remember Balor as an especially tough opponent. Killed him on second try without any special tactic (with a low level party).

Remember always to cast 'Prot. from Evil 10m R.' and other similar protective/boosting enchantments when going for one of the big ones.

Simply summon some pets to use as a shield , then use bows and slings and two fighters to go head to head with then just that, the demons just wanna go after all the pets you summoned , and take them on one after the other , not all four at the same time

I finally did beat him. Thanks, Rail, for reminding me about stoneskin. That gave the extra few seconds I needed to get Spell Resistance off. Then it was a piece of cake. Two Holy Smites, one Sunfire, and a few good whacks from Carsomyr sent that bastard back to the crack of Hell's ass.

Having read some of the suggestions makes me wonder if we're talking about the same Balor... without Spell Resistance from Aerie, I was never able to get past his magic resistance, not once. And I tried about 20 times. As for hanging back and pounding him with missle weapons, what kind of missles can you use to hit him? The most powerful missles I had were arrows +2 and bullets +2. Balor, however, can only be hit by +3 or greater weapons. How did you manage that? I tried summoning a Fire and Air Elemental, as well, and he walked right past them to get to my party. Just curious.

Hello I just finished killing the Demon And I have to asy I might have the record for the most re-loads known to man or women. But what I did to finale beat was cast Protection from evil 10 foot one. Minsc and Jahira consumed potion of storm giant strenght which will help the cause on doing damage in a quick hurry. Edwin cast protection from magic energy on minsc, then when I summened the demon then as soon as he popped out airea cast bolt of glory the only spell that would work and bam he was dead. I went back to check the hits and good thing minsc had back to back critical hits with strenght of 24 that helps.

I did this in 5 reloads with a p*ss-poor party.

H'D up front with that +2 shortsword giving free action and +3 backstabber for hurtin' the fell beast. He was immune to the holds but eventually chickened out. My Cavalier was unable to help - held by the demon, as was Jaheria. Imoen was faffing around and eventually Minsc (not held since H'D was the target of most of the hold spells) Just whacked away with +3 Frostreaver and Aerie casting cure light wounds on him.

Now that party sucks and Minsc took the Demonspawn out with some help from Aerie and a little distraction from H'D ("Hey, Mr. Balor, look at me, yeah the annoying little tailed-git with the blue hair, bet ya can't hit me!!!").

And then the mighty demon splattered Haer'Dalis across the room....beef chunks a-flyin'.....

I know it didn't happen, but it would give the little Tiefling jerk what he deserves. Being "of fiendish ancestory", he of all people should know who not to **** with....

"H 'D, *I* am your father!"

Man, I must have gotten lucky. Took him out first try without even a char going to half HPs. Keldorn w/ Carsomyr, Minsc with Lilarcor, Aerie with Flail of Ages, and 2 mages casting spells. Took maybe 3 rounds. No haste, no potions. Main char and Keldorn had chaotic commands.

Skeleton warriors are the key to beat Balor. Holy Avenger and Melf's Minute Meteor fully kicked this butt!!!

Down him twice last night without injury to NPC. I have four mage (Me conjurer, Edwin, Nalia & Imoen) Jaheria as spell caster & Keldorn melee.

That whole map was easy with cloudkill wand, except the imprisoned guy that could cast imprisonment. Spore colony, Mu Toa(??) Monitors and Drows are no match to the wand's round by round poison, making spellcasting nearly impossible except for contingency.

I had no particular problems with Balor. A couple of summoned skeletons and two fighters - other characters using magic (and one with a sling of Everard) killed him reasonably easily.

I didn't find Balor difficult in any way, i've had more trouble from 2 illithids and 6 mind flayers Image. Just haste your fighters, spell them up with everything you got, and he'll go down just like that *snap of your fingers* Image
