As objective as I want to be, yet I still not recommend any games produced by Ubisoft.

I concur. :( I strive to be obejctive, especially when it comes to something so many people put effort into. However, Pool of Radiance was horrible, and I would not recommend it to anyone. SSI could not rest on their laurels; they just had to do this.

Another game I found odious: Black & White. Yuck. That pretty much sums up the impression I was left with after playing that game for a few hours. No one can ever recapture the feeling that creating volcanoes gave you in the original Populous game.

@fable:
I'm probably going to catch flak for this, but I think SimCity 3000 is pretty damn dull. Once you've mastered the equations, there's very little to do.

You won't see any anti-aircraft fire coming from me, fable. ;) Whenever I behold that game resting in the rack at my friendly neighborhood retailer, I just know it would swiftly earn a place in that dusty pile of CDs in the closet, along with Arcanum and Call to Power II.

Lords of Magic - bad graphics

Quake - I'll probably get shot for this, but I think most of the environment is pretty dull, unlike Duke Nukem for example. I haven't played the latest versions though - don't know if that makes a change.

Baldur's Gate 2 - I'll get hit for this too, heh, but before that happen, everyone should know that I've posted in the BG2 forum before and said good things about the game many times, so there.
Anyway, I think there are jus too many bugs/cheesy methods for one to exploit in the game - which kind of attracts/repulses me. If I play the game, I have to use 'em, but then it kind of spoils the fun.

Quest for Glory V - I've played Quest for Glories I-IV and personally, they're much better - or were at the time - I think the whole 3-d movement thing didn't work out THAT well and the game jus seemed so superficial (roleplay-wise). They should have kept the voices out, and made more speeches.

The designers of the QfG series had a new team to work with for QfG V, and have said they felt that was the problem. Whether accurate or not, there are some amateur programmers, fans of the series, who are doing a QfG VI. They're calling it "Hero 6," and you can read about it here. They've said that they want to put back in all the classic qualities that made the first four games so good.

Cool fable, thx for that. I'm a big QfG fan. :)

Sure thing. I enjoyed the earlier games, as well. The only decent graphical adventure I've played lately has been The Longest Journey. It would be nice to see a real Sierra classic--after Sierra has long gone out of business. ;)

I loved QfG 3. I had no idea what I was doing when I played it, but that didn't stop me form having a ball. :D

Is the Longest Journey really that good? I saw it in a charity shop for a fiver, but my new-found studentiness means that I have to decide between games and drinking every night...this time, the booze won out. Is it an essential purchase, a well-made game or just one to get if you're bored? Is it up to the standard, for example, of the LucasArts adventures?

Both the Sims and Diablo 2 got annoying after a week's play. I actually enjoyed the original Diablo, though...

Hmm...I was addicted to Diablo II for almost a year, and though I will never play it again, I recognise it as one of the most finely-honed and -crafted pieces of gaming art that I have ever played. Somehow, it never got boring, unlike games like Half-Life (go on, burn me now) which never seemed to have the same effect on me that it obviously did on others...I found it pretty tedious. Ah well, you can't enjoy everything...

I enjoyed Half-Life, but I don't give it the praise most people do. In my opinion, it had its flaws (like the last couple levels were nothing but jumping puzzles). I enjoyed D2...while I was playing it. In my opinion, its biggest weakest was the fact that I had no motivation to continually play it (unlike BG2).

The Sims is really easy. And quoting from fable : Once you've mastered the equations, there's very little to do.

although i am a devout half-life lover, i know what you mean. i've recently played through it again, it took me about 3 evenings, i knew what was around every corner, and i got bored at the end and stopped playing. i love the game, but the best things about it become stale after a while. the problem is that it is very structured, and however much imagination and creativity is in the game, the structure never changes.

Compared to, say, quake, i believe ihalf-life's a much better game, but i've been playing quake on and off for years now simply because it's a fun game, it achieves its purpose, and doesn't go stale because the action is fun, and that's all the game is. the first time through, quake was good, but i found half-life amazing. now, quake still has pretty much the same effect, while half-life bores.

It's the same sort of thing with Diablo II - it has a limited amount of originality or creativity, but it does its own thing better than any other game.

The Longest Journey is good. :) I cannot compare with other games, because I don't play that many. Unlike other RPG, you cannot choose your character attribution and skills, so it's different. The graphic is great and the storyline is even better. :)

I'd agree with Minerva, though I wouldn't call TLJ an RPG. It has a lot of depth, intriguing characters, and an unusually adult storyline that involves forgiveness and learning to accept responsibility.

Now that I've made it sound like a textbook, I should add that it's plenty of fun, too. ;)
