Detect Illusions

Post by Xyx »

Is it any good? What kind of successes have people had with this? I'm not interested in whether it's better to put points into this or into lockpicking or whatever, I'd just like to know if this is any good whatsoever.

I've had a lot of success with detect illusions. If you have 100% in d.i. you'll dispell most illusions in an instant. It's great for a solo thief, for instance. Mirrorimage, blur and the like is dispelled for sure, yet I'm not positive that it'll dispell simulacrum or project image, yet why not? The ability has no written limitations to my knowlegde.
Also note, that putting more than 100 points in d.i. is redundant.

Detect Illusions is nice, but not overwhelming.
It has one advantage over True Sight/Seeing, however - it's Spell School: School-Less, so it'll ignore Spell Immunity : Divination.
Can be useful against some cheesy enemies - Weimer's creations and Ascension baddies (and probably some enemies in RtW, right? :p ).
I cannot be caged.
I cannot be controlled.
(I probably cannot be contained either) :p ;)

Nice. :)

So how does it work? The manual says you need to enter Detect Traps mode. That true? Is there any reason why you wouldn't be doing this the whole day?

And how long do you have to wait for it to work?

No way to dispel a Simmie. You can only kill it.

As Alson says,Detect Illusion is the only mean to reveal invisibility when
enemies have Spell Immunity...

"Enter Detect Illusions mode" means a simple click on the "Detect Traps" button. ;)

It applies instantly, or within a round, i'm not sure...

within a round

it's rumored that with more than 100% it will be quicker

Having less than 100% can be a serious waste of time. Remember that this works the same way Turn Undead or Bard Song do, ie you cannot do anything but move while in Detect Illusion mode. If you fail on the first round, you must wait until the next, effectively taking your thief out of combat.

Also, I do not believe this works on invisibly creatures (at least I have had no success with it) so it is not a complete replacement for true seeing. Not many NPCs cast Spell Immunity: Divination so is that a real advantage?

but a simmy can be deathspelled...found this out the hard way....and spell immunity abby will NOT work...nor deathward...

i hate to say this, but jack is right, the only forced spell immune creatations are by wes, and you can still target with spells, so unless wes makes his creations unreasonably powerful, they are not invisible or improved invisible....

it really doesnt make sense unless youre playing multiplayer, and then it might come into its own to allow targetting for save or else or spell protections remover....but even then, unless the server has ease of use installed, you will see the whiffle ball allowing for targetting with area effect spells...

i really cant see it being useful....true sight is better in almost all respects...

True sight is better, but thieves' detect illusion is for free.
I mean, you never run out of this like could happen with True Sights.
It definitely can dispel all forms of invisibility.
Someone told me that with over 200% it can also dispel mislead clones. I think it is true.
My swashbucler has 250% now (just to be sure), and believe me... It works ;)

Cost: click on detect traps, do nothing for 1 round.
(You will be doing nothing anyway if your opponent just turned invisible, correct? Until the next true sight "fires", I mean. Did you memorize True Sight? ....no? Oooops!) :D
Where we came from, we don't know
Where we're going.... (even worse)
And about who we could be, we actually have trouble in clearly defining the term "to be" in the first place...

Detect illusion is very useful. You dont need 250 to dispel mislead. 100 will do nicely. It will dispel all forms of illusions. It is possible to fight and dispel at the same time. First you select your target and attack then you press detect traps. you will know fight and detect illusions/traps at the same time.

Sneaky. I'll have to try that some time. Can the same effect be managed with the Bard Song, I wonder?

No sorry. But you have about one round or a little less before the bard song effects wear off so you can sing, attack, sing instead, or better yet, sing, cast, sing.

Untrue.
Xyx and I verified.
Probably your clone was of level 8, so it was affected for this reason ;)
