Your thoughts on the rpg-side of IWD2

Post by Jaesha »

As said in another thread, I won´t get IWD2 before friday, so as a little "appetizer" if you will ;) , I´d just like to hear your thoughts on the roleplaying perspective of the game.
I know it´s mainly hack n slash, but the party banters, haven´t really heard anything about them, really curious.

Is it possible to start a game with, say, 2 characters and then later add one or two more, so as if new adventurers had just joined the group?

Thanks in advance. :)

Because the player creates all his party members, there is no party banter to speak of. I have heard of one instance where if you have a Paladin as the leader of your group, your party members may comment of the fact that he's always getting the party into fights with evil beings. Because he's a Paladin, its his job I guess, but thats just something I've heard on another thread somewhere, not sure if it's true or not.

You can start the game with as few charactes as you wish. You can also add and remove party members at your leisure, but I would recomend that you create a party and stick with it. Anytime you add a new person, he's always going to start at level 1 even if the rest of the group is at level 10, so he'd be extremly underpowered. When it all comes down to it, IWD2 is a hack n slash RPG with not much roleplaying really. It has a good story, but the player's role in that story is always the same. If your expecting a deep RPG, you'll be disapointed. Thats not to say its a bad game though, I love IWD2 and the character creation part of the game is great fun.

Yes, I am aware of the fact that there is very little, if any at all, roleplaying in it, which IMO is very sad, as it is probably the last game using the beloved infinity engine which has become somewhat of a friend to me. :)
The character creation and the 3E rules is the thing I´m looking mostly forward to, and the new spells, of course.

Well, any thoughts on the game in any perspective is welcome anyway. :)

While I'm enjoying the game immensely, I'm a bit disappointed that the difficulty level gyrates so wildly.

The game is pretty challenging for the most part but there are long stretches where you just roll over everything, inevitably followed by an absolutely insanely difficult battle, or two or three.

For example, you hit a new map, kill some minor creature, walk on a bit. Oh, here comes an ice troll, no, make that two ice trolls - no problem. Oops, make that four ice trolls - this might get a little tricky. OMG there's like TEN of these things! Funny the FoW didn't prevent those off-screen ones from seeing what was going on over here and tromping on over - they must have really good eyesight. Lots of reloads on this one.

Or you go thru a door to a new map and find yourself yourself in a confined area with 2 spellcasters, 9 harpies, 4 or 5 earth elementals and nowhere to run. This particular encounter was the first time I actually made it thru on the 1st try, this despite having my ranger die and my cleric resurrecting him and him taking two tries to collect and equip all his dropped stuff. I see I'm down to 1 elemental and 4 harpies and I think 'wow, I might actually pull this off'.

What a sense of accomplishment! Until you realize it was a cakewalk compared to previous encounters and encounters yet to come. Still, a good feeling while it lasts.

But it's good to back in an IE game - it's like meeting up with an old firend you haven't seen in ages and you have a lot of catching up to do.

The nice thing about BIS and Bioware battles is that you know there's a good way out of the mess, if you can only find it. I threw the lot a few bones (in the form of some summoned critters) then headed back inside the merchant compound, so as to control the warzone. Lost no one.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

fable- Boy, have I made use of that a lot! Didn't think to try it in that instance, tho.

Then there's the 'ranged shuffle' - equip everyone with bows or slings/missles, target 1 creature, hit 'em, runs a ways, hit 'em again, back and forth across the map, run stop, hit, run, stop, hit til they're all gone. Used that one a lot, too, in the early stages.

Agreed fable. No matter how hard a battle is there are always several solutions that you have to find in an almost puzzle-solving way.

Potions often go unused in inventories until the veteran player realises they can be used to make an impossible battle easy.

I agree with Doc, there is not much in the RPG part of the game it is pretty much Hack and Slash and Shoot and Impale and all the other nice name for grusome deaths you can find. But the story is nice and from time to time when you have a quest and a certain type of character will talk to the quest person or monster, you wont have to run around half the bloody game to finish it. Though overall I really really like the game and the voice acting is amazing I think. Not sure if you have the game though so I cant say which ones are the best. But I think you wont be disapointed in the game. Almost no bugs and .... eh well the box is pretty looking too. :D
