Suggestions on LOTR-party, please

Post by BlackJesus666 »

Hi @all,

I´m planning to play with a LOTR-party.

I though about including the following:

Frodo - Lightfood Halfling - Rogue
Stats: 10/20/14/14/10/8

Gimli - Shield Dwarf - Fighter
18/14/20/10/8/6

I´m not quite sure about these:

Legolas - Wild Elf - Archer
Make him a fighter? Hmm, think I NEED a healer. Probably make him a druid. Could get some Fighter levels for the archer-feats (he will use a bow, no matter what...)

Boromir - Human - Fighter? Could make him an Aasimar Pally?
Never played one in IWD2 :)

Gandalf - Human - Wiz oder Sorc?? If Sorc, I could make him Aasimar as well, for the Cha-Bonus.

Aragorn - Human - Ranger
Well, maybe switch race to Tiefling?

It´s obvious, you have to compromise between authenticity and playability. I mean, you could go with Gimli, Legolas and Boromir all being fighters, but that would be too boring.

Maybe I make Boromir a Paladin of Ilmater to add in some Cleric levels later on. Maybe this is a very bad idea at all, because you can never raise stats high enough as such heroes deserve :-)

What do you think?

frodo - halfling fighter/rogue or ranger/rogue
gandalf - human sorcerer (stick to evocation, servant of the secret fire theme)
gimli - dwarf fighter
legolas - elf fighter/ranger
galadriel - elf or aasimar (just for fun) druid
aragorn - human figher/ranger
boromir - human paladin
arwen - elf ranger/wizard

don't limit yourself to the fellowship of the ring. there are plenty of interesting characters in the series.
Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.

You could even have Gollum as a Deep Gnome Rogue or Sauron as a Human or perhaps even a Tiefling Fighter. If playing in Heart of Fury, Sauron could even be a Fighter/Sorcerer, theres certainly enough levels to make that an effective combonation.

Frodo = rogue
Gimli = dwarf fighter
legolas = elven ranger
aragorn = human ranger/cleric
boromir = human fighter
gandalf = wizard

I don't think that any of the main characters are of paladin peity, maybe some of the sub characters, for example the prince from southern gondor who is in the return of the king.

Agree that there aren't many good female adventurers who could be drawn from LOTR, eomen would make a good fighter, galadriel would make a good druid or wizard, imho arwen isn't really the adventurous type, staying true to the books anyway.

Frodo: Thief
Aragorn: Fighter/Ranger, mainly fighter.. Human (Aasimar?)
Legolas: Obviously a Ranger, maybe add some fighter
Boromir: FIghter
Gimli: Fighter
Gandalf: Race is a difficult one, since hes a maiyar, right.. lets keep it with human :D Wizard or Sorceror.. if it was possible he would be like 40 sorceror/30 Cleric :D
Pippin/Merin = Thief
Sam: very weak and fat fighter :D

Aragorn didn't look like a Paladin to me nor a Cleric, he was a self-professed Ranger. His healing prowess was good, but not to the standards of a Cleric, a Ranger would best describe Aragorn.

hehe I think everyones suggestions is cool, exept for Frodo. Make him a 1/1/1/1/1/1/1 cause he sucks pretty bad and usually dont do anything but wear the ring and a chainmail, and oh yea he gets hit a lot and .... most people in the party die cause of him.... hmmmm ta ha!

Yo. Aragorn has definitively to be a ranger.
In the first movie, they even called him Aragorn the ranger. At least in the german translation.

I think I make Boromir a pally/cleric, though it doesn´t really fit his character.

Oh BTW, can someone give me full names of the characters mentioned above. I only know their (bad) translated names.

Like Gandalf the Gray.
Frodo....

thx

The Fellowship of the Ring

Gandalf the Grey
Frodo Baggins
Samwise Gamgee (Sam)
Peregrin Took (Pippen)
Merriadock Brandybuck (Merry)
Aragorn son of Arathorn (a.k.a. Strider)
Boromir
Gimli son of Glo'in
Legolas

If anyone wants to put as much detail into their LOTR party as possible, here's the full names of the fellowship; although you can't fit some of the names into the space provided, oh well. Please forgive my spelling if it's a bit off.

LoTR Party

Here is the 4 man party I am using. Its really a Two Towers chase party - no hobbits:

Aragorn Human - Ranger /Lathander Cleric
15 str 15 con and 16 wis

Hates Undead - He definitly was a Ranger, and the toughest one there was. But, the hands of a King are the hands of a healer and no man could withstand his gaze, therfore he has high wisdom and I took the strong will feat.

Gandalf Assimar - Sorcerer
High chr and some int and con

Guardian of the Secret Flame so I use fire spells. He is not really human. I took Bastard Sword feat, he used Glamdring.

Legolas Wild Elf - FIGHTER/Thief
mostly dex, int and str

He never used spells. He will also get some thief levels to simulate scouting, and forrest sneakiness. He has mostly bow feats, but also fights up close with a long knife (dagger or short sword). Forrest Lore.

Gimli Gloin's Son Shield Dwarf - Fighter
str and con

Fighter all the way. Should probably have taken the gold dwarf but didnt want to lose dex. He uses axes, he may pick up hammer skills later. I think I took toughness and axe feats.

There was a similar thread once in the TOB forum; 2nd edition BGII, but still a lot of good ideas and discussion.

It was eventually moved to the RPG forum.

I finally started a game with this group:

Frodo - Lightfood Halfling - Rogue - NG
10/20/14/16/8/8

Gimli - Shield Dwarf - Fighter - LE
18/14/20/8/10/6

Boromir - Aasimar - Pally(maybe Cleric later) - LG
18/10/14/6/16/16

Legolas - Wild Elf - Druid - NG
10/20/12/8/18/8
I know it´s odd. But I need a healer.

Gandalf - Aasimar - Sorceror - LG
8/12/12/18/10/20
I decided to give him a lvl of Paladin, to improve his bad saving throws.

Aragorn - Tiefling - Ranger - CG
18/16/16/8/14/6

I tried to avoid minmaxing as far as possible, but give them all the good values they need. Also a bit of power gaming. A lvl of pally for Gandalf, maybe a lvl of Ranger for Frodo, Aragorn being a tiefling... I know it´s not as authentical as it could be, but interesting enough for me :)
I´ll try to stick to weapons they really used, but I think I need some bludgeoning backup. Surely Gimli can wield hammers nearly as good as he rages with an axe :)

Comments?

Interesting Idea's, but how does a Drow even come close to relating to a Balrog?

Out of curiosity, why would you make Gimli evil? He may have been a bit on the wild side, but he was at least neutral if not good.

Boromir, Not Paladin!!!

Come on, Boromir can not be a paladin...Just read the book or even watch again the movie.
He is a pure fighter.
