One of the more unusual things I've read, that.
I think I'll wait for CE to expand on that rather than try to find an appropriate link myself, her scientific knowledge is far larger than mine. I read it in one of those scientific journals while waiting for a dentist appointment a few years back.
Sorry for the late reply Ode, I haven't seen this until now. Since I'm here to serve, I of course have the explanation for the phenomenon you describe. :D

Male lactating in concentration camps has been recording in several hundred cases, and the reason why this occurs is actually fairly simpe: In order to lactate, a hormone called prolactin (surprise, surprise) must be present in a certain amount. Just like with oestrogen and testosterone, both men and women produce prolactin, just in different amounts. Now to the concentration camps: During starvation, some organs will shrink due to cell death, and one such organs is the liver. The liver breaks down prolactin, so when your liver is too small to degrade prolactin appropriately, the concentration of prolactin in your body will rise. When the level of prolactin is high enough, you will start to lactate.

humbug. i go to all the trouble of identifying the muppet song you were enquiring about in the lyics thread (and finding the lyrics too), and how do you repay me? a trumpeter with a side parting and a brown cardigan?

actually, it is impressive. good lateral thinking that man
