Import characters into...Never Winter Nights?

Post by Yuusuke »

Ok, We all know that they "claim" you can import your BG2 characters into Never Winter Nights during the loading screens in Baldur's Gate 2.

But, since Never Winter Nights is going to be online, how would they be able to filter out hacked characters from Baldur's Gate 2?

And would they allow characters to keep all those bonuses you gain at the end of the game?

Has anyone heard anything from the NWN people as to how they're going to address this problem?

I'm no programmer or anything, but is it even possible for them to detect which characters have been hacked by Shadowkeeper or other means, other than saying, "We'll just block all characters with ??? combined points in attributes." Since the BG2 allows you to reach godlike stats legitimately if you just play the game enough times.

Its quite simple really, all imported charaters will be at level 1, I really dont know the way that Characters with 25 in all stats created by using editors will be handle by BioWare, but since they appear to going to use a vault type of system to keep the characters, perhaps they will not let any character with those stats to play.

Legitimately you can only get a character score of under 100 (too my knowledge) so any players with a higher score than that are likely to get booted. There will probably be an XP cap situation.

Maybe it will move all scores back to their highest available limit (usually around 18 or 19) why is there the ability to get to 25 anyway. Image

From what I understand NWN isnt all online, you can play through the modules with your own parties. There are actually two types (or mabye 3 types) pure online that are stored in the main vault that are ok'ed official characters, server types that are saved on the server only, then I believe theres offline types probably where your BG2 characters would fall in. You can use characters in lower access areas but then they can not be transferred back to higher secure areas.

Hence I believe your BG characters would keep all their stats/level/equipment but would not be allowed into the greater online world (except maybe on a server that allows such).

If they just start all imported characters at level 1, what's the point of inporting the character at all? Why not just restart from level one with the same name?

Now, only allowing imported characters to play in NWN private games sounds interesting, but that kind of takes the fun out of online.

Another problem I forgot to mention, what about the rules? The rules for BG2 and NWN are different editions. How will the handle the crossover?

i don't think that there will be much of an issue with the crossover. imported characters will simply be alloted equivalents in the new 3rd edition rules...I wouldn't believe that the designers of AD&D as well as never winter nights forgot to percieve that problem.
Its all good, it'll work out fine.
