Killing the Chult Guardian (like...how?)
Killing the Chult Guardian (like...how?)
OK - I must be missing something obvious.....
How do you kill the Guardian in Chult?
After about 50 replays, I managed to get it down to "Almost Dead" once - then my
only character capable of doing it much damage (sorcerer) ran out of useable spells. And this was on "easy" mode. Up until now, I have been cruising along on Normal difficulty - then BAM - I can hardly touch this thing.
Again, I must be missing something obvious. Is there a special "guardian killing" trick I failed to discover?
By the way - I just went ahead and played it out by clearing the temple - that allows be to progress in the game without killing the guardian - but I would still like to kill the bugger if it is possible.
Thanks!

Also you can put stoneskin on your warriors and get your priest ready to bust out heal spell, also summoning a couple of critters could help and then running your warriors in. The fight is kind of tough though, but heck dude this is a DRAGON. Not the BG2 where you can just Quvering Palm the poor thing.
Trap? What trap!? Ah shi....!!!!

If you want it a cheesy way, have one character put the last thingy in, to summon the dragon, immidiately run away(haste!) to your party.
Cast MULTIPLE skull traps on that small way leading away from the temple entrance.
Cast one or more area effect spells near the hidden dragon. He starts attacking you. Skull traps should damage him severly.
As mentioned before, have at least +3 weapons ready.
If you like to harm him with magic, be sure to cast Lower resistance on him.
Magic Missile, arrows and melee damage should make him R.I.P.

I found a way to beat him but it is kinda cheesey. SPOILER AHEAD
Before the battle cast stoneskin on all your guys or at least on the maximum number of guys that you can memorize for. Then cast improved haste on your party. I save it then so I dont have to recast these spells if I dont win the battle. Then place the last idol in the slot to summon the guardian. Once he gets there, have your party attack it. IWD2 allows you to pause the game and select what you want your guys to do. Here is where the cheese comes in. Keep pausing the game so you can have your mage cast spells on the guardian. Cast lower resistance on it then offensive spells like magic missle, acid arrow, disentigrate, and whatever you can cast. If you pause the game, read the scripts about the battle to see who the guardian is attacking. I found it easy to take control of the guy that the guardian is attacking and move him around so he cant be hit. Then when the guardian moves its attention to another member of the party, have the guy you have control of attack the guardian and move the guy that is being attacked. The pause makes it so easy to do this. And make sure that your guys have lots of healing potions equiped and have your clerics heal the people that are hurt. The battle is not too tough if you do it this way. Cheesey but works. And your weapons have to be at least +3

Thanks for all of the help. It looks like the +3 weapon bit was what was killing me. When I first tried the Guardian, I didn't have many +3 weapons so my tanks were really not doing much damage. I found my sorcerer could get some spells through after casting several "lower resistance" spells but the sorcerer alone just didn't have enough firepower to finish the guy off.
Other than that, I was already doing most of the things people have been suggesting in the thread - but without those +3 weapons it was a lost cause. The strangest part was that I really hadn't had a very challenging battle up until the guardian - so to suddenly be defeated so badly made me thing I must have been missing something obvious.
Thanks again!

spoiler, dont read if you dont want to
another way (how i did it) is have the entire party immune to fear'ed and hasted, and then, have one tank up the front.
I had 4 toroise shells memmed with my druid, and 2 heals iwth my cleric. after 2 broken shells i moved my other fighter in and he started slashing on the dragon while the other fighter was tanking with the other 2 shells and 2 heals, slowly moved the rest of my party in, and had my sorcerer magic missile him from the start (with 1 lower resistance at the beginning)

Im bumping this thread in hopes that people have come up with more strategies of tackling this beast
“Caw, Caw!” The call of the wild calls you. Are you listening? Do you dare challenge their power? Do you dare invade? Nature will always triumph in the end.

Nevermind. Kid gave me some suggestions that worked quite nicely I must say.

The skull traps, and a much better set of weapons that I used up all my money with. The chromatic orbs didnt work at all. He was immune.Originally posted by KidD01
Good to see you finally smack the dragon So which one worked ? The Chromatic Orbs or the Skulltraps ?

It's kind of funny with everyone talking about cheesy ways and "guardian killing tricks". To be honest, I reloaded only once before killing him on normal mode, and it was with no more cheese than usual. Meaning - all the possible buffs (including Mass Haste, Improved Invisibility, Stone Skin, Protection from Fear, etc.) on the fighters, and I just attacked. I had two fighters (pure fighter and barbarian), a ranger, cleric and rogue (all fired from a distance and could barely hit the thing) and a sorcerer (who used lower resistance followed by any and all direct damage he could muster). When one of the fighters got hurt too much, I backed him out and quickly (quick spell) instantly healed him to full HP with the Cleric, then came back again. I used no summons whatsoever (never do).
Here's the thing that might have helped me a lot: my Sorcerer was an Evocation specialist, and by specialist I mean two points in the Evocation feat and two points in the lower magic resistance feat (can't remember the name). Basically 4 (and sometimes all 5) out of every 5 Magic Missles connected (with help from Lower Resistance).

If you're having trouble with the Chult guardian there is a simple(if a bit powergamerish) solution.
Load up on +3 ranged ammunition(ESPECIALLY arrows of Piercing. You should have a bunch of them now. Them, Surestrike ammunition).
The guardian is also kind of vulnerable to Lightning(with only a 15 points resistance) so load up on lightningbolts&Chain lightning(by now you should have wand of lightningbolts).
Also a few lower resistance spells will come in handy.
Buff up the whole party with what ever things you need(especially something to resist fear).
Set your most useless character up to activate the portal and then Rush him back to the stairs and cast Oliukes Resilient Sphere.
Now the dragon can't get to you, his acid breath doesn't have the range to hit the rest of your party and his Dragonfear can't do jack.
Just pelt him with spells and ranged ammunition and he should go down quite fast.
Otherwise you can just throw some form of anti-fear and then run around in circles and pelt him with +3 ammunition. If you decide to do that then Mass haste is a very good spell.

- I don't play fairly.
summon 5 indead beasts where it would spawn
move everyone out of view of the spawnpoint, haste, strength and chant/prayer/recitation your fighters
equip the least important person with the otiluke's resilient sphere necklace, and send him in to put the last pillar on, then cast the sphere as the dragon deals with the undead
the dragon will then turn its attention on the sphere, even though it cant do anything to them
send in your fighters behind it (with plus 3 weps of course) and hack away...if it turns around (usually only when you get crits) just move away and it will turn its attention back to the sphere
this is because it goes after the person who summoned it
it should be easy, without casualties (unless you get loads of crits...how ironic)

Have you ever heard any more inspiring or logical words? I sure haven't.

Thats pretty cool Mini Me I like that strategy. I use a similar strategy in battle squares, using summoned creatures to lure the apponent. I like the Otilukes Res Sphere tactic, I've never really used that spell. I've a pretty well balanced party and don't really need these kind of tactics but it is interesting.
