Has anyone noticed charisma affecting prices at stores like it is supposed to?
I can have my bard with Cha of 18 buy and sell stuff and then my gnome fighter with charisma buy and sell the same items, both with them as the party leader, and the prices are exactly the same no matter what.
And the same applies for the Mercantile Background Feat..........has anyone seen this affect any prices? Because I sure haven't.
I'm still in Chapter 2, so maybe this changes later, but it would be most worthwhile early in the game when you are so short on money.
Buying stuff at stores........

Having taken the game's word for the discounts, I paid prices no heed when buying/selling. This thread aroused my curiousity, so I tested the discounts. Test subjects are as follows:
Aasimar Paladin of Helm/Fighter L. 3/3; Cha. 18, Mercantile Background.
Half-Orc Barbarian L.18; Cha. 6
Test items:
Long Sword (run o' the mill, mundane variety)
Cloak of Displacement
Golden Heart of <char.name>
Test Location: Diedre Galloway's such-&-such coster, Targos.
Results:
With the paladin speaking first, the buy prices were 15gp for the longsword, & 10.000gp for the cloak. The sell price for the Golden Heart of..., which was in the paladin's inventory was 110.000gp
With the barbarian speaking first, the buy prices for the longsword & cloak were 19gp and 12.700gp, respectively. Next, (I found this interesting) the Golden Heart...'s sell price was still 110.000gp, & it was still in the paladin's inventory.
I then moved the Golden... to the barbarian's inventroy and had the barbarian speak, which netted the lower sell price of 100.000. Finally (finally, sheesh!), I had the paladin speak with the Gold... still in the barbarian's inventory. The price? None other than the (lower) 100.000gp.
As side note, the sword's name switched to match the barbarian's when offered for sale in his inventory.
The moral of the story:
The discount is truly honored, so long as the customer is truly honorable.

Thanks, not sure why.......
our results are different.
I have had my bard with Cha 18 initiate purchases and sales of things such as axes, chainmail, +1 dagger, etc. and then had my gnome fighter with Cha 8 take the items (after reloading a saved game), take the lead spot and initiate the same purchases and sales and got the same prices.
I'm sure your results are true, but I just don't know why mine aren't. My Bard even has high diplomacy skill, just in case that mattered.
And my Bard has the Mercantile Background feat and I can't see any 5% discount.
I have the latest patch installed, so I guess I don't know what the deal is.
I guess I will try some tests again at one of the other people you can buy and sell with.
Thanks for your reply!!

I'm not sure if the Mercantile Background works either. I didn't notice it. The prices are always nice round numbers which wouldn't be the case if 5% was deducted.
The charisma certainly works for certain items. I cast Eagle's Splendor on my bard before going on a shopping spree. I bought the book that gives you 10.000 XP from the monks for something more than 80.000. Normal prices is 100.000 ?

I decided to check the effect of the Mercantile Background in the same manner as the Cha. effects. Heres what I found:
Store: Diedre Galloway's Store, Targos
Char's:
Aasimar Paladin of Helm/Fighter L. 4/3; Cha. 18, Mercantile Background.
Wild Elf Druid L.18; Cha. 18, No Mercantile Background (Not human)
Character........................Paladin........Druid
.......................................Price...........Price.....%Saved
Sell
Cloak of Displacement .......10.000......10.500.........5%
Flail (Mundane).......................10............10.........0%
Buy
Powerful Sword..................27.500......25.000........9%
"Cera Sumat"
(Note: a 5% disount on a 10gp item would net 9.5gp)
As before, the character that first speaks sets the buy price, and the charater whose inventory contains the sell item determines the sell price. If you're buying items, speak with your high Cha. If you're selling items, it doesn't matter who speaks, but rather who carries the items you plan to sell.
