Balor is quite the toughy...I've personally found him to be one of the toughest fights in the game. To defeat him you will need to know a few things.

1. Balor can only be hit with +4 weapons or better.
2. You must protect your party or at least whoever is fighting him from (stun and fear).
3. He can be hit by morkadianian swords..mage summoning spell level 6 and they are immune to his stun spell. (actually 2 or 3 of these hasted will kill him easily).

4. Keep (weak)clerics and mages as far away from him as possible as he seems to like to kill them first.

5. He can be hit by elementals but they only have 1 attack per round so you must haste them.

if you've got a cleric with holy bolt, that might help, holy word might stun him for awhile, summon some skeleton warriors, i think they will hurt him, also air elementals, hmmm, do you have carsomyr? if you go to drow city...
spoiler...

and come back out, you should get ambushed by a fairly decent level enemy party-one of the weaps is the dragon breath halberd, that should hit the balor, its a +4 weap.

i don't remember the fight too well, i think i smacked him down good, with carsomyr and i can't remember what else, fight wasn't too hard....

I cast protection from evil on my party, My Cavalier had the Holy Avenger, my Fighter/Cleric had a +3 hammer and the Flail of the Ages, my Ranger had Daystar and Flametongue, Jaheira had the Staff of Lightning. Jaheira hit him with Call Lightning, the other three attacked. He died in about two rounds.

oh yah, my main char was a cavalier too, so he had immunity to fear, could cast protect fear on everyone, and had the boots of speed on.
and he had the cav bonus vs demons

Cast a Lower Resistance + Greater Malison + Finger of Death combo at him. Took a few tries, but worked after all. Also you could try my favorite, Harm + 15xMagic Missile, if you have a good cleric to do the Harm. Anomen is just perfect for that with Holy Power and some magic items that improve THAC0, like Helm of Balduran and/or Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise.

This is using a bug in the game,

Send one character with high magic resistance & ring of free action after him and place all your other characters near the left hand door in the gnomes village inn.

Allow Balor to chase after the resistant up character when he runs out of spells lead him to your other characters

There will a place where he gets stuck and if you use long reaching weapons (two-handed swords, halberds etc.) you can hit him with-out him hitting you.

After a few tries I also won because of a glitch. I had all my troops wedged in top left of cave with a web spell ready for balor. He stunned all but minsc. got unstuck and came up to get me and got stuck and I was able to hit him 1 every 4 tries with the talking two handed sword. The web was gone but he couldn't turn left to face me. It was like there was no room, [top left inside cave]and he made no effort to defend himself after that. LOL Image

The Balor is indeed a toughie. Here's my party, and what I did.

I had Keldorn, Jaheira, my archer, Minsc, Aerie, and Imoen. I had Keldorn and Aerie stand near the door where the Balor first appears, and lined up the rest of my party along the northern wall. Before summoning the bad boy, I had Aerie cast Remove Fear and Improved Haste on Keldorn and herself, and Stoneskin. When the Balor appeared, I sicked Keldorn on him, and tagged him with Spell Resistance from Aerie. He's not stupid, so he immediately attacked Aerie during the casting. That's what the Stoneskin was for. While she did that, Imoen hit him with Lower Resistance. This pretty much eliminated his magic resistance. After that, it was a piece of cake. A few Holy Smites from Aerie, a Sunfire spell from the Daystar longsword, and a few Melf's Acid Arrows from Imoen sent that beast back to the crack of Hell's ass. Image Good luck.
