Ranger question

Post by Jaff »

I have two Rangers in my party. The one sits in the back with a bow, The other I want to use the two weapon style fighting. Are short swords the fastest? What is the best way about going at this? Feats and all. Thanks in advance.

Short swords are the most damaging weapons you can use for two-weapon style without penalties - the game engine will nail you for heavier weapons. Keeping your ranger in light armor allows him to use the Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon Fighting feats for free. Give him a high dex and the Weapon Finesse feat along with weapon focus in short swords to make him really effective. If you want him able to cast spells, his wisdom needs to be fairly high - start him with 14 there and eventually boot it to 16. With weapon finesse your ranger only needs a high-enough strength to be able to carry stuff - 12-14 will do it. You can then max out the dex, put 14 in WIS and a decent amount of points into CON. I'd recommend a 12 in INT to get a few extra skill points. Set Hide and Move Silently high, and allocate points to Concentration (for spell-casting). Having a decent Wilderness Lore (10+) helps you navigate the notorious Fell Wood. Other feats you might want to take later are Blind Fight, Dirty Fighting, Sub-Vocal Casting, Improved Critical, and feats that improve saving throws.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Subvocal Casting is a waste especially for a ranger.

Jaff seems to have already started a game. So he can´t change his attributes.

If you have high strength on your ranger. Lets say 16 or above. Stay in Light Armor and take a short sword in your Off-Hand.
You can take whatever weapon you like in your main-hand.

I don´t think a ranger is needed to put down to a finesse fighter.
His BAB is increased with every Level up. So if you wait a little time, until his attack bonus gets decent, he can easily wield two bastard swords and do a HUGE amount of damage. Sure, you have to spend two feats on Bastard Sword, but i think it´s worth.

You´ll be on -4 / -4 attack malus, but before turning on Power Attack with your finesse fighter, to do at last some damage, your ranger can really take that.

2 rangers?! wif the amount of races and classes available, u'd have 2 choose 2 of the weakest class available. real waste.

Sure he can. He needs only to download DaleKeeper2.

hrm... seems a lot of forums discuss quite a bit on the possibility of ranger classing.

1st, lets look at ranger as a class on its own:
-gains BAB (base attack bonus) as a 1st-rated fighter
-some spells casting abilities (a tone down of a druid / cleric)
-grants 10hp/lvl (1st-rated fighter)
-bestows the all-time-favourite ambidex & dual-wield (RESTRICTION!! can call it spoiler.. really: only in light/no armor)
-saving throw advancement high in fortitude(con), low in reflex(dex), low in will(wis)
-racial class bonus/modifier +1/5class lvls (this is very very negligible.. unless ur ranger is lvl 30 which grants +6 to BAB)

2nd, the fighter (the SOMEBODY-STOP ME guy):
-gains BAB 1st-rated
-10/lvl
-sav-throw advment high-fortitude, low-reflex&will
-no. of feats gained = class lvl/2 + 1
e.g. lvl 10 fighter gets "10/2 + 1 = 6" feats!!!!!!!!..... !!!!.... !
fighters gain feats in according with class lvl(1/ 2lvls) + the basic char lvl(1/ 3lvls) which every1 gets!!!
-weapon specialisation and auto-armor proficiency 3 grades.

now u need a healer? no prob....
3rd, druid:
-BAB 2nd-rated
-8hp/lvl
-sav-throw advment high-fortitude&will, low-reflex
-gains the following feats (!!): immune poison, immune fatigue, wild shape (which can substitute ur healing ability - amount healed i dunno.)
-spell cast!! unique druid spells also.. partially-accessible by ranger

4th cleric:
-BAB 2nd-rated
-8hp/lvl
-sav-throw advment high-fort*will, low-reflex
-spell cast!!
-turn undead. (btw.. if u effectively turned undead, u dun get exp right?)
-cleric orders! the little advantages and domain spells gained here!

my personal recommendation would b a fig/dru.
how i win a fighter over a ranger? they share the same traits but fighters get more feats! take lvl 4 fighter/4 ranger. if u'r talking about dual-wield and ambi-dex, both of them would have it by now. (fig: lvl1-1 feat, lvl2,4-2 feats, ran: lvl1-ambidex, dual-wield but with armor restriction) there is also the character lvl feat gain. (take note the game takes into account different types of level values: character lvl - sum of all class levels, class levels, think there's 1 more i might have forgotten)
in the long run, the fighter class gains many many more feats (add feats gained according to class lvl and char lvl)than the ranger and they are good intimidaters!

druid against cleric?
they both have the same healing spells. both depend on wisdom cleric u might even have to throw ur ability points to charisma to effect a better turn undead. diversify.....
clerics have a slight notable trait - class orders. check up on that urself, k? which gives a couple of domain spells, usually light damaging or alignment-prot spells.
druids have shape shifting abilities.... in the actually ad&d world this is a very very significant strength. especially the shambler (where my brother quite rambling about how fearful it is or how power it is blah blah blah..)
it can be substituted as a self-heal spell (think it heals "character lvl d 1" hitpoints. i.e. lvl 12 character shape shifts to heal 12 hp!)
the wild boar at lvl 5 does a 3d4 damage. cool? lvl 7 winter wolf does good piercing damages and sprints faster than my monk! (or could be same speed, lvl-dependant) and when u get to bear.... u really claw and maul ppl to death! very nefty eh? i wonder if shape-shift does grant any ability point bonus... think i should according to the original 2nd ed rules... not sure abt 3rd ed.
unique spells.. pls explore. quite a lot. definitely good here. the clerics more powerful spells are actually wizard/sorcerer spells. and they dun gain access to a lot of those anyway. rathe ru take a wiz/sor.

that's all. quite long here so take time to read and digest. remember, character building is impt and look at things in the long-run, not just now (like yay! i get dual-wield and ambi-dex at lvl1 ranger... then hahah die liao. i can't wear heavy armor and dual-wield and ambi-dex without penalty.... i think its even dumber if some1 actually takes a ranger and adds points to dual-wield and ambi-dex)

over and out:B
