Well, there is a offset.
As a Thief/Ilusionist you have a extra spell slot but you cannot memorize necromatic spells(you can still cast those spells from scrolls but its espensive).
As a Thief/Mage you dont have the extra spell slot but you can memorize any spell.

- Shadowdale low level adventure module.

- Rashmare /Thay high level adventure module.

Illusionist/thief is a much better character class, Gnomes get +1 to intelligence and necromantic spells are mostly useless

Though if your character is going to be mainly a thief elves +1 to dexterity is very useful

I thought u were playing as a Kensai/Mage or did u gave up on that one already?


Also concerning ur question, do u want to dual class or multiclass?

If multiclass I would go for Ill/Thief
other wise dualclass at thief lvl 10 (u got nice scores in ur thief abilities then).
