Armor penalties for thiefs.

Post by Ceso »

Soloing as an assassin is pretty difficult. So I started to wonder what is the true best armor for a thief... that does not hinder skills much. The table in the book is.... odd. Which leaves me with a few questions..

1. Does regular leather and studded leather have the same penalties?

2. Why does it appear that Elven chain is actually less hindering that leather? As well as regular chain mail.

3. What are the hinderances for scale armor, such as Shadow Dragon?

Thanks for the replies.

I had the same question. According to the charts, it looks like the best AC for a thief who wants to maximize thieving skills is no armor with Bracers of AC 3. However, I did a little playing around with shadowkeeper (basically, importing all the best variations and seeing how they affected theiving skills), and it seems that, despite what the manual says, those rules were never implemented. There doesn't seem to be any change in your skills when wearing different kinds or armour or no armour (unless, of course, the armour offers some bonus, like the stealth bonuses for The Night's Gift).

If you look at the charts, you'll see that they include other thieving variables for both thief and bard that weren't implemented in the game. It's a really sloppy manual in that respect. The charts aren't nearly as good as the ones in the BG1 manual.

So, that said, it seems pretty clear to me that the best option is the shadow dragon scale. Now you just have to go kill that shadow dragon with a solo assassin. Have fun with that. Image

Cool! Thanks for the info. I'll make sure to kill that ugly dragon when I see him, can't be any harder than Kangaxx with a solo assassin Image Actually, assassins aren't that tough.

If you play smart, set traps, and totally abuse the poison ability, most enemies will fall easily with some planning. The only problem is the Thaco for a assassin is very disappointing.

One item that realy works well for jobs a thief can't handle is the cloak of the sewers. Just cast transform into a troll, cast holy might, and hordes of monsters can fall at your rotty feet Image
