BG2 Refuses to Cooperate

I've played through six times, but I wanna play BG2 again. For those of you who know me, I have had a LOT of problems with this game before... And now, I have another one.

Installing BG2 on any of the size settings (recomended, full, whatnot...) the install freezes at exactly 61% (or, when loading Movies), when it begins spinning in the disk tray, makes a wierd noise, and eventually runs so much and gets to hot that the thing is ejected from the computer. I'm wondering if this is like the Freezes at 99% known issue, but I've tried that fix and it won't work either.

Or, the disk might be scratched, which is a major possibility because I don't use the cases anyways, but I'm still hoping I won't have to run out and buy a new copy of both BG 1 AND 2

If it's hanging at the same exact spot everytime, chances are, you got a bad spot on your disk. You can try copying everything onto the hard drive and seeing if you can install it that way, but most likely, from the sound of it, you're gonna have to get a new disk. I had the exact same trouble with BG1.

Have you already tried to clean the cd? If you don't use cases, it may be nothing more than something on the CD that will come off.

FWIW, I would suggest trying to install the game using those disks on a friend's computer. It's worth the effort to save yourself a trip to the store and a search for another copy, because it just may not be the physical CD that's the problem.

Do you have plenty of space on your drive, and did you check for any drive surface errors? I know that surface problems are rare these days, but if you have a bad spot the computer may be trying to constantly write on it without success. Norton Disk Doctor (to name just the most obvious company) can check this for you.

When all else fails, IMO, check with Fibble. He seems to know the most esoteric spells for healing computers--and good luck.

EDIT: I'll check back in tomorrow, and see how things have gone. If the problem still exists, I'll move this folder to Tech Support, where it may get more attention from the really strong tech types.

One way to get around a problem like that is to do a Minimum Install and and then, after the game is installed, manually change it to a Full Install. Bioware posted the instructions on their support site. I suggest that you do one thing differently: instead of copying each CD to a separate folder, put all of the DATA files into one folder and all of the MOVIE files into one folder, and make the CD path your main installation directory. You can eliminate hundred of megs of duplicate files that way. If you have trouble copying files off one of your CDs, you'll know where the problem is.
