I think you're wrong, @Fable. In SoA, often you don't have enough
spells, and HAVE to do some melee.
In ToB, you can literally rely COMPLETELY on spells, if you want.
The only creatures whom I remember to be completely immune to magic
are Magic Golems... and even there, you could just summon some low
level monster with normal weapons...
But if you speak about personal tastes, I won't argue
I think that sums it up. I personally found that magic was far less useful against the big guns in ToB, and that a stout arm with a really nifty +5 weapon did the trick.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I agree not only can Aerie provide support with Imoen, but also with whatever cleric or druid class you eventually choose to have in your party, I would probably just whittle it down to three fighters, or four depending on your preference, and keep one cleric class or mage class for the last two members of your party, I mean the disadvantages of having one mage aren't so bad, you get to upgrade Imoen later on if you want with

Morph the Mad's machine, something like that, Sarevok's pretty good, same with Keldorn, personally though I would keep Jaheira, mainly because of those radical fire, earth and air elementals she can summon, and she can provide fighter support for whatever your other three tanks are, and at the same provide support with Aerie's clerical abilities, chaotic commands, skeletons, etc, buts thats just me.

The first time I played through TOB, I had my ranger, Minsc, Sarevok, Aerie, Nalia and Imoen. My party rocked. I loaded up my three fighters with all of the bruiser HTH weapons and had my mages dropping comets and dragon's breaths left and right. I kept Aerie around with a heal spell or two, but mostly relied on potions and resting in the pocket plane for healing.
In my opinion, the biggest drawback to the magic-users in TOB is that they run out of high-level abilities fairly quickly. Where fighters can accrue repeated greater whirlwinds, critical strikes and death blows, there really isn't anything for mages to get past about level 24. I'd have liked to have been able to get more low and mid-level spells (1-6) if nothing else.
