@Ambiorix, if you can't laugh at the guy in power-at-the-moment who can end your life with a flick of a wrist, then your lot is worse than a bug on the wall.

EDIT: Btw, the last poll I saw indicated that roughly half of the people in both the US and the UK were opposed to a war with Iraq. I wasn't aware that 50% of the population in those nations were followers of Islam.

@Fable. Hey, I think you can get a good laugh out of Bush. But you'll have to admit that the motley crew of "militants" in Europe that reguraly take to the streats protesting Bush are worth a chuckle themselves. Of which the guys who support this site are a good example.

I never laugh at the powerless who have the guts to protest. After all, they stand to lose a lot--in Italy, where protesters at the WTC were shot. In the US, where in past times they've lost their jobs in blacklists. In Temijin--gods know, a love of peace got those folks nothing more than a massacre. There is nothing laughable there. I'd as soon kick a dying dog and laugh as it bleeds.

But I will most certainly laugh at Dubbyah, particularly when some of the same people who attacked and laughed at Clinton are busy telling me to shut up, he's our president and must be respected, etc.

The powerless? Like these professional protestors end militants are the poor and excluded. They have enough means to travel around the world and hold democratically elected governments hostage by violent streetprotests. It's everyone right to protest against whatever they want. But they loose my sympathy when they turn violent. Or when they associate with the "Communist Party of Britain" or march under flags with hammer and sickle. Marxism is an ideology which has proved its extreme visciousness throughout the previous century and continues to do so until this day. What if the "Fascist Party of Britain" was there as well? Not like it would be impossible. A big part of the far right in Europe seems to share the anti-americanism of its leftist counterparts. As witnessed by the double visit to Saddam by FPO-leader Jorg Haider.

And your comparison between the spoiled children that turned violent in Italy (and panicked a policeman enough to use his weapon) and the protestors that were intentionally massacred by the communist regime at the Tien-an-min square: what can I say?

Nothing in itself. I even sympathise with the Welsh and other nationalists and regionalists in Europe. If pressed I can sing "Men of Harlech" for you, if you want. But in this case they don't half keep strange company.

to criticise the various organisations opposing any war against iraq because you disagree with the ideology of some of them is ridiculous. to call them 'professional protesters' and refer to violence ignores the fact that the demonstrations against the war in the UK, major and minor, have been non-violentand have in no way 'held the country hostage'.

to say that they lose credibility because they in any way share opinions with the Communist Party of Britain is ridiculous, since that according to you even some on the right share these views, let alone the vast majority of those from all across the left wing and, according to the polls, the majority of the public share their position.

also, marxism, whatever your opinions on it, is an ideology that is radical, yes, and possibly unworkable, but i don't see how it aims to be viscious . how the regimes who would implement their version of that behave is an issue with the regimes in question. the Communist Party of Britain have, as far as i'm aware, committed no abuses of human rights.
