Bottom Line...is this game any good?

Post by Sirius_Sam »

Guys (shout out to CJDevito, Fable and Mr. Sleep),

I just got Tribunal (haven't installed it yet and need to reinstall Morrowind), playing through NOLF2, IWD2, Age of Mythology and having a "it must be a sin 'cause it's too much fun!" experience with online Battlefield 1942,but...

...word of mouth is that this is a really good CRPG and before I open the wallet (you know the one with the squeeking, rusty hinges?) I would at least like to hear from like-minded people as to it's potential. Is it stable? Is a patch out? Does DD have an editor? Who thought up such an incredibly retarded name for the game? Ummm...stuff like that...kinda ;) .

Basically, there are a few good games and add-ons that I'm playing now and just want a quick enlightened opinion if you think Divine Divinity is a 'must-have' (at full price), a total stinker or somewhere in-between. $40 at Software Etc. seems a bit on the expensive side for a game I know so little about.

Thanks for any feedback :)

Hi Sirius_Sam,
to put it that way: I played this game starting the day it was out here in Germany - but as well, I had weeks of not touching it because it made me raging with fury about all the bugs in the original release. Meanwhile there seems to be out a patch No. 1.32 which, so is said, cures quite a bit of the horror (that one I haven´t got yet, my experiences with early patches made me careful - no way to use savegames of earlier versions aso).
The story/game itself is rather worth a try - doing really ALL quests and subquests can take you weeks to finish (if you´re not sitting 18 hours a day at it); the world is a really big one, the skill system is great, armour- and weapons-customizing included (with sort of coming too short bows; those developers never did archery, for sure ;-)) So, if you like epic dimensions and have no hurry, give it a try, I´d say.
greetings,
cccc

Here's what I wrote in an earlier thread:

"Well, it's a 2D CRPG that combines Ultima VIII with Diablo II. There's the ability to use all sorts of things you come across, as in the Ultima series, but thestats are only four in number, and you can embed jewels in some weapons to create magical effects. Frankly, I think it's an improvement over the Diablo stuff, because the game allows you to design your own character with 90 skills to select from--avoiding Diablo II's forcing you to choose between only a very few skill paths.

"There's also an engaging sense of humor to the thing. I briefly watched a pair of skeletons reflecting existentially on how odd it was that they could actually talk without any lungs.

"There are problems to the game. I think the Diablo-inspired dungeons are far inferior to the external, Ultima-inspired battles, in large part because those Diablo dungeons were booooring, endless treks through identical caverns; and you always knew that at the end, there was a stupid, slightly more powerful boss monster waiting for you with goodies. But still, it's a pretty decent RPG, and one I'm enjoying."
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Just a quick note, yes it is good and yes it is buggy, I have a few crashes to desktop and quicksave corruption. I will add more later.

(added later) Basically the game is great, the freedom it allows you after the first dungeon is great, there aren't that many quests but the quests one finds are very large can span hours of work, rather than the "take A to B come back for reward" one often finds there is actual skill and ingenuity needed.

The choices between characters are also diverse, the mage has many interesting spells, the thief is also quite handy and the warrior is as expected. However one isn't set down a certain path, a warrior can dabble in magic and visa versa. This freedom of choice is quite refreshing and owes quite a lot to Morrowind I feel.

As one progresses the influences are quite obvious, there is a bit of NwN here, a bit of BG there and a bit of Morrowind over there. Definately not a problem but it is interesting to notice how the genre is progressing and tipping its cap to the past masters.

The major problems I have are the same as with all CRPG's which is immediacy, there is only one quest on the game which was time specific (iirc) you can wander around for many hours and still come back and complete a quest that was "gravely important"...just seems shallow to me.

Another problem is stability and although I wasn't dogged to badly it has crashed to desktop a few times and I have also lost my quicksave and half an hours work about 10 times. Plus there is no autosave feature.

The story is slightly cliche however it is focused from a different angle for a long time so that is pleasing.

(and now for something completely different) Apparently there is in fact a Hot Fix patch released which corrects the problems I have been having quicksaving. It now writes the save games to temp and then overwrites the save game file. Very smart. On the subject of Save Games, they are quite big, I think the average on e is 10 MB, Just a word of warning since it can easily eat up your hard disk. Also apparently the slow down problems I spoke of before have been corrected in a patch. Good to see a company working quickly on the problems.
I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.

Hey Sam. You're behind the curve on this one... I've moved on to Tribunal already :)

Anyways, I don't think you'll be disappointed with DD. It's not an instant classic, but it -is- a good game. It has shortcomings, but it's still a lot of fun. It's derivative, but the games it's derivative of are all quite good (and there aren't all that many similiar games, either).
