and to get back on topic, i've found the 3rd edition a little hard to adjust to also.

so far the feats that really seem to pay off big have been -

rapid shot
improved criticals
dirty fighting
weapon finesse for low strength high dex types.

and the various elemental feats & school foci for the sorcs / wizards.

The problem with rapid shot, is that it really is rapid. I ran out of arrows before I knew it, and it was in a battle where a lot was going on, so chaos just errupted.

Now for dirty fighting, Ive thought about investing in that. But what scared me away was the percent chance of it. Is that irrelevant in this given situation? And also the fact that they could make a fortitude save. How frequent does that happen?
“Caw, Caw!” The call of the wild calls you. Are you listening? Do you dare challenge their power? Do you dare invade? Nature will always triumph in the end.

re rapid shot - in the early game i go through bushels of arrows, commonly i use a lower strength party member as a giant quiver, and fill their inventory w/ arrows.

dirty fighting seems to work fairly regularly, i use it more with lower strength chars, with weapons like the scimitar or keen weapons - wider crit range.

+ dual wield or rapid shot (extra attack gives another chance to roll crit)

plus it's something for nothing, (besides the cost of a feat) it'll happen automaticly you don't have to toggle it on and off like a power attack or expertise.

...and rapid shot, isn't it? Even though I have it for my archer, I always forget to activate it within the heat of the battle :(
I would add Dodge is quite a good feat (+1 generic AC... I think is generic). I also get power attack (the same goes as for the rapid shot) but it enables cleave, which is automatic (you do not need to activate) and even though you might not see it I think is quite useful when fighting hordes of enemies, specialy in HOF mode (sometimes they are just too many).
Besides controversies, here is my current party (in hof mode)which I guess I should post:

1. Asimaar Pal2/rangerx/fighterx (Tank1) Aragorn
S18-D16-C14-I3-W9-CH20

2. Shield Dwarf Fighter4/barbx (Tank2) Gimli
S18-D18-C18-I3-W18-CH1

3. halfling rogue6/fighterx (archer-thief) Legolas
S11-D20-C16-I14-W12-CH3
I used the halfling kit but the sprite figure is an elf.

4. Moon elf Bardx (mage) Arwen
S6-D16-C14-I14-W8-CH18

Obviously these are the beginning stats, and each point and class was planned for a reason. I can say these group of 4 "power" guys can travel around fairly nicely even in the hof mode. Just as a note my bard can cast cleric-druid-wizard spells from scrolls but also sings, healing and greatly increasing saves and skills from the party. Also as a limitation to my game play I do not use shields or heavy armour (as in the Lord of the rings fellowship). And another thing, "my" interpretation of cleverness in the BG series (not in D&D) which makes "me" happy, is the combination of Intelligence, wisdom and charisma (charisma is not how beautiful you are, you have to be cleaver to lead or convince someone, even though is true that if you are really ugly it will be a bit more difficult :) .
