Multi Thief Party - Good or Bad Idea?

Post by Indra »

I've just started a new game of SOA with my Chaotic Good Half-Elf Fighter/Conjurer/Thief (Yes, I know. But I NEED the extra spell..!). I was wondering what everyone thought about running a multi thief party through the game. I always take Jan with me as my mage till spellhold as I really hate Edwin, and Imoen is always along for the ride afterwards. I've never taken Jan to the end of TOB, and feel really guilty dropping him after the Underdark. So I'd like to keep both in my latest run. Given that, I was wondering how I should allocate points:

Me: (Good fighter/backstabber/backup mage with illusion/alteration spells mostly ..buffing and hiding. Great Scout..)
1) Hide in Shadows
2) Move Silently
3) Detect Illusions (I'm a conjurer - no divination spells..)
4) Detect Traps (This is an iffy - Depends on how many points I need in Detect Illusions..)
5) Set Traps (Eventually..)

Makes sense to me as I've always been travelling with Immie who's a pretty decent lockpicker/Trap detector..

Jan:
1) Pickpocketing
2) Open locks
3) Detect Traps
3) Set traps (Eventually..)

My Party: (SOA):

My Char
Korgan
Viccy
Jan
Imoen

(TOB):

My Char
Sarevok? (Or maybe I'll keep the psycho Dwarf..)
Viccy
Jan
Imoen

How does this party look? Most importantly, can anyone tell me how high I have to be in Detect Illusions to dispel Mislead, Project Image - the Biggies? I've searched on the forum and there appears to be no consensus - do we need above 100 or not? If we do, how high? 150? 200? Thanks..

Well, your party is already quite magic heavy to begin with, even without your, ahem, hacked PC. Imoen can bump her intelligence up to 18 at -SPOILER-the machine of Lum the Mad in Watcher's Keep-END SPOILER- and learn 9th level spells, plus her open lock and detect traps are already great. Jan's thief skills only get better since he's a multi-class, plus his selection of spells complement Imoen's nicely. That's more than enough in both the magic and the thievery departments, if you ask me.

Sorry I can't help on how high dispel illusions must be. Usually 100 suffices for most fights, for me, anyway.

Your party looks good, regardless; and definitely take Sarevok over Korgan when you get to ToB.

Personally, with Jan and Imoen around, I would've played another class all-together, like a stalker (if you like stealth and some spellcasting) or an assassin dualed to fighter (if you like seeing groups of enemies wiggle in agony from poison).

About the over 100% theif abilities, I think that the game just takes any number of 100 or greater as 99%. Detect illusion at 99% will produce the goods.

IMO you're party sounds pretty fun, overall. At high levels, you'll get some sick combos going. Double t/m's means double backstab while mage-buffed and going into some nice contingency combos... as well as double UAI, double exploding traps

and... then the kind of buggy cheater:

.
.

f't multiclass can pick up multiple assassinate abilities, to talk about some damage try some of those pups in a time stop (so long as the baddie doesn't have immunity to backstab...

I've had Immy and Jan consistently get lv. 9 and quest spells without Impaler's spoiler. BGII seemed to lighten on the INT requirement of the PnP rules.

All the mages together will really let you wreak havok with multiple dragon breath, ali-dalzims, time-stop combos, etc. especially with the spell-50 mod... and then don't forget Viccy's high level cleric spells and buffing, look out.

Sarevok is very fun, what an attitude (not for the light at heart)and the doombringer assult rocks... but the dwarf's humor is fun as well. For what its worth, I agree with Impaler about the assasin to fighter. I am playing with an assassin I plan to dual, after UAI how about cheese. Here's my question on that: can you backstab with the Holy Avenger with UAI? I have been waiting for it, what a chaotic thing to do... the poisoned holy blade in the back for X 7 damage (whahahahah...)

You can only backstab with thief weapons whether you have UAI or not. So no Carsomyr backstab!
Sorcery and Shadow together as one, the arcane and the dark united. Through our knowledge and skill none can stand against us. We are as one, infallible and invincible. The Shadow Mages. -

Some Heroes stand, some Heroes fall, Others can't 'cause they got hit by a fireball.

For wicked backstabs I can recommend staff of the ram... or balck blade of disaster or why not...shapechange Iron Golem :D
If you have 100 in detect illusion you will dispel every illusion within a round.
With locks and traps you sometimes need more than 100.
You can't handle the truth!

Doh :o Too bad. A poisoned holy sword is still pretty chaotic, hehehe. Staff of the ram it is, and all t/m possibilities! I better start saving some scrolls...

So does the game make adjustments for over 100% theif abilities then?
