Most OVERPOWERED High Level Ability

Post by Ainu »

What High Level Ability is the most overpowered?

I vote either spike trap or greater deathblow.

A few spike traps can kill a dragon instantly, it feels like you don't even have to try to fight the monster.

Greater Deathblow, perhaps my favorite HLA, can kill mind flayers, beholders and more instantly! Improved haste on an archer with the tuigan bow, run into a beholder nest and watch them all die in seconds.

Improved Alcarity (sp?) is just plain nasty for a mage...

Time Stop + IA + robe of vecna = About 6 horrid wiltings, 5 finger of deaths, about 5 magic missiles, and a couple of comets or dragon's breaths

:o

Improved alacrity is powerful... second only to Use Any Item!

Use Any Item is definitely IMO the most overpowered high level ability. Especially if you have a multi/dual class.

Use Any Item

I once had a Blade that wore the robe of Vecna and a Ring of Acuity, and wielded the Staff of the Magi (for spell trap) or a Scarlet Ninjato+Crom Faeyr combo.

I agree...UAI rocks!

TimeStop and Improved Alacrity. I tried it once, and stopped using it. Damn thing was just ridiculously powerful, took all the fun away of winning a battle.

Same here - the combo got boring, since my mage could literally empty his/her spell book and still have time to stand around.

I like to use Improved alacrity without casting timestop. Monsters try to get close enough to hurt you but the spells just fly of so fast that they die before reaching me hehe.
However use any item is still top of my list. It lets my thief cast simulacrum and then use all the timestop scrolls in the game over an d over again. Most battles can be won by stringing timestops together and hitting with belm and kundane... cast mislead if you want to backstab, and improved haste if you want 8 attacks per round... 9 with gauntlets of extraoridanary specialization. Who needs 3 stars in dual wield and good thac0 when all attacks hit anyway hehe.

I would never thought of using UAI like that, I need to try that out. :)

I recommend a solo assassin and you'll see the value of UAI.

How would I get passed Stoneskin or most other mage spells?

You can use traps - lead the stupid mage over them, use one of those wands of spell-striking from WK, nail them with an arrow of dispelling or fire/ice arrows if not protected from normal missiles, etc.

I well and truly did not know that one could back stab with the staff of the Ram.

Thanks for the info, Bruce. :)

Well you can hehe. It ends most enemies straight away. I posted this picture some time ago and this is only with staff of the ram +4.

Ouch! 350 damage?

Bruce, I am very interested in soloing an assassin. What is your optimum equipment? Both mid and end game. Did you solo ToB with him?

I haven't completed ToB yet... I have several games running hehe. I have to warn you that the backstab hide backstab hide thing can get a little old after a while but is still a good solo class.
As I was soloing I powergamed a little bit and picked a halfling... best saves and most thieving skills. 19 dex is a must. Develop hide, move silently pick locks and detect traps first. I started out with a katana and moved on to staff. I use darts as my ranged weapons, plenty of good darts around and they have good rate of fire... poisoned darts are the quickest way to kill adamantite golems.... you'll find good darts in WK.
Since you are a thief you get UAI so all items are good items... Stock up on everything and use everything really.
Good luck!

Thanks.. I am roleplaying a little more than you though. I went with a chaotic neutral elf with these stats:

Str 12
Dex 19
Con 9
Int 17
Wis 7
Cha 8

My halfling is also chaotic neutral...a fitting alignment. Let me know how you fare.

Pretty easy so far. Out of Irenicus' dungeon I did the circus quest and freed the slaves, and now I am in the middle of working for Mae'Var. I stole a bunch of stuff, a Katana+1 and Leather +3, and I plan to purchase the Mercykiller Ring and Girdel oHGS very soon.
