Anyone else found ToB quite funny... the dialogue that is. Many cool options available straight away.
What was the best line?
I really liked the Oh Captain my Captain hehe... so cool IMO.

You recognize the joking reference to Walt Whitman? I'm impressed. :)

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead...

It's not his best by far, and has been the butt of satire repeatedly over the years.

That is one great aspect of this wonderful game, there are so many subtle references to a variety of things in the game.
I can tell you that I first heard of Whitman when I saw Dead poets society :D
However I have heard and read more since...
So what is your favourite line? There are many so if you can't single out one you don't have to... give us two :D

I liked the one in your Sig Bruce...
The "You can't handle the truth!" quote. :)

Anyone ever noticed the Martha Stewart reference by Cespenar?
It goes like this:
"I keep looking, but I runnings out of recipies soon. Needs to find Martha, soon. She around Hell somewhere I thinks.
I'm not from the States, but even I knows who Martha Stewart is! :D
I cannot be caged.
I cannot be controlled.
(I probably cannot be contained either) :p ;)

Understand this as you die,
ever pathetic, ever fools.

Walt Whitman?! Aargh! Damn you Walt Whitman! *kicks grave repeatedly* I... Hate... You... Walt... Freaking... Whitman! "Leaves of Grass" my ass! Image Image
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Actually, my favorite cross-literature reference didn't occur in a game, but in a very lengthy, well-plotted adventure Ranma 1/2 fanfic. (Ranma 1/2 is a typically strange Japanese anime that spoofs martial arts.) At one point, two demons sent to mess with the mind of one of Ranma's finacees realize they've made a big mistake, and one of them says, "Screwtape will eat our heads." Screwtape is the "hero" of the CS Lewis' controversial but entertaining book of essays on the nature of good and evil. Now, *that* was esoteric. :D

Best recent game one? The name of one of the best teachers in Morrowind is Miles Gloriosus. They got it from Ancient Roman farce, where Miles Gloriosus was a satire on the braggart, bullying Roman soldier.

Another literary reference, better known:

Cyrano the Gnome, over in the Temple District: the series of sequences spoof Rostand's great romance/adventure play, Cyrano de Bergerac. (Get the subtitled French film version, with Gerard Depardieu. Well worth seeing. Do it. Now!)

And the way they make names (as most RPGers playing in a fantasy universe do); twisting names of things nearby.
I believe one of the designers was brushing his teeth when he came up with the name of one of the Cowled wizards who attack you for doing magic in the city, Kollyonnus Paac...

OK old thread here, but anyways...
My fav little subtle referance in the game is during a dialogue between Mazzy and Aerie, (I think its mentioned in the funniest NPC thread) in which Aerie is talking to mazzy about the possibilty of a hafling becoming a true paladin, and says she heard of a time when haflings could only be rogues, but nowadays they can be fighters and even barbarians and clerics. Mazzy replies that she has her doubts that the gods would come make some sort of hafling 'third edition'

The gods, representing game designers, and mazzy referring to third edition DnD in which haflings CAN become paladins...lol
My mind is like concrete; mixed up and permanentally set

"Bondari reloads" (and accompanying dialog). 'Nuff said. If anyone could get a transcript of this cutscene I would be ecstatic... :D

Prepare to be ecstatic. ;)

Several adventures have been turned into statues (A halfing thief, a half-orc barbarian, and an elven mage). The PC turns them back into flesh.

Bondari: Die, cursed eyeball! Wha? Huh... ? ... Do I, uh, know you?
Player: I have freed you from your stone prison, young adventurer.

(Alternate dialogue choice:
Player: No, but you will know the sharpness of my steel. Die!
Bondari: Ah! Tim, cast Magic Missile! Nanoc! Attack! I'm outta here!)

Bondari: Uh, thanks. Guys, are you okay?
Nanoc the Barbarian: Yeah.
Tim Goldenhand: Yes (no thanks to you... can't even backstab an eyeball!)
Bondari: Shut up, Tim! Greetings my, uh... (Lord/Lady, depending on pc gender). I am Bondari Quickhand, a thief. These are my companions Nanoc the Barbarian and Tim Goldenhand. He's an elf. And a mage.

(If Aerie is in your party:
Aerie: So young and eager... *sigh* I can hardly believe I was ever as naive and innocent as these three.)

Bondari: Uh... I guess I should thank you for saving us. Is there some way we brave adventurers can repay your kindness? Something we can do for you to fulfill our debt of gratitude? Anything? Anything at all?

(Alternate dialogue choice #1:
Player: Just put up a good fight, dog!
Bondari: Ah! Tim, cast Magic Missile! Nanoc! Attack! I'm outta here!)

(Alternate dialogue choice #2:
Player: You could tell me how you come to be here.
Bondari: I am Bondari Halfman! I left my peaceful village in the Dales, seeking adventure and fortune! I met Tim and Nanoc in a tavern and we formed a party to explore the Underdark. Well, we found a cave. Then we found some eyes. Then they turned us to stone.
Player: Right. Why don't you just stay here where it's safe.
Bondari: Uh, alright.

Alternatively you can select the following dialogue, which was also available in the last dialogue tree.)

Player: I have a job for you Bondari. A terrible evil has swept across the land and lives of millions hang in the balance. You have been chosen, Bondari, and you must not fail in your quest.
Bondari: A quest! Wow! This is great! What do we have to do?
Player: A fiendish beholder and his kobold minions have infested a cave to the east of here. An evil dragons threatens the land! I must have the beholder's eyestalk to slay the dragon and save the country from certain doom!
Bondari: By Mask's mask! We can't let this happen!
Player: Go, noble adventurer, and retrieve the eyestalk. The fate of Tethyr lies in your hands!
Bondari: What kind of reward do we get.
Player: The satisfaction of a job well done. Do not argue, even now the dragon raises his army to crush the world!
Bondari: Well, we will be saving the world... Alright, we'll do it! Let's go, boys!

(Alternate dialogue choice:
Player: I shall give you... 100 gold!
Bondari: 100 gold! We're rich! You have a deal (sir/ma’am). We shall fetch this eyestalk and save the world. C'Mon guys!
)

Tim Goldenhand: Wait! I have to rest and memorize Magic Missile!
Nanoc the Barbarian Worry not, elf. Nanoc will protect you!

Several days later...

Bondari: (I'm telling you we can take [CHARNAME]. Nanoc, you are unfettered by the weaknesses of the civilized world! Tim, you can cast Magic Missile! I will backstab. I bet (he/she) has all kinds of great treasure!)
Nanoc the Barbarian (But Tim is terrible. Remember the kobold king? He cast one spell then hid behind a rock while we had to slay everyone!)
Tim Goldenhand: (Hey! I have the healing potions! I heal you!)
Nanoc the Barbarian (I can shrug off a blow that would fell a normal man! Unfettered by your civilized ways, I...)
Bondari: (Enough! Ready...) ATTACK!!!

The PC morphs into the Slayer and promptly slaughters the adventurers.

Bondari reloads...

Bondari: Uh, here's your eyestalk (sir/ma’am). We found something else, too. I hope you like it.

(It doesn’t matter which of these two you choose, since Bondari responds the same:
Player: You have saved us all, noble hero.
or
Player: Great, now get lost.

If you promised them 100 gold you can choose this instead of option one:

Player: Well done, Bondari. Here is your reward.)

Bondari: Thanks. It was a good quest. I found a dagger and Tim got a scroll of identify. In a couple of days he'll be able to tell me about my dagger.
Tim Goldenhand: Hi.
Bondari: Thanks again, [CHARNAME]! Bye! Good luck with the dragon!
Nanoc the Barbarian I bid you a 'Farewell' suitably unfettered by civilization.

Also If you talk to the adventurers individually:

Nanoc the Barbarian I am Nanoc the Barbarian! I was raised in the hard lands of the North and am immune to your pathetic civilized ways! With steel in hand I walk amongst unknown dangers! Always I am victori...
Player: Sure you are, Nanoc. This conversation is over.
Nanoc the Barbarian What did I say?

Tim Goldenhand: I am Tim Goldenhand, an elf from the forest of Thorn Wood. My parents were slain when I was a babe and I was raised by wolves until the age of 20. Eventually, a beautiful ranger, entranced by my mysterious wildness, took me from the forest and...
Player: Never mind.
Tim Goldenhand: The story's really interesting. You should hear the whole thing!

Whew! I hope you appreciate that! :D
