The Loners Thread, soloers welcome!

Post by Ainu »

Hi GameBansheers! I am new to the board, but not to IE games.

Does anyone go through the entire game with just one character? Post your character and your progress here.

Try not to use any major cheats. XP Cap Remover is definately allowed, as well as stuff like editing your avatar.

I'm thinking of either a multi-class mage/thief or mage/cleric for myself. Any suggestions?

Crappy stats because I really want to role-play him. I hope my updates will come soon.

I've soloed a fighter-thief through the game - I may solo a bard after my current run through BG2 with a neutral-evil party.

Cool!

And thanks for the reply.

A bard should be pretty easy as soon as you get a good crossbow and wands.

Thanks
I intend to,
i stopped when i got to busy with college, and forgot to pick it up.
Would be hard continuing it now that gamebanshee requires payment, now i can't see the maps.
And since I hardly use the site anymore (I won't say I can't miss the money, everyone can spare 3buck a month), I don't think I want to join.

Just started my bard solo - I must say this is proving to be the most challenging solo game by far.

Jade

Chaotic-neutral female half-elf bard

Stats

STR: 16
DEX: 18
CON: 16
INT: 15
WIS: 10
CHA: 15

Proficiencies

Blunt *
Bow *

Current Equipment

Studded leather armor
Girdle of Piercing
Ring of Protection +1
Staff +1
Longbow + ~160 arrows
Wand of Magic Missiles
Potions of Healing and Defense

Quests completed

Jade ran around Candlekeep doing the various errands to earn enough gold to buy some armor and a longbow. She had a little trouble with one of the assassins, and had to drink the healing potion she received from one of the healers.

Once out of Candlekeep, she met up with Imoen, who "gifted" her with several healing potions, a potion of speed, and a Wand of Magic Missiles. (Note: Imoen automatically joins you if you're not rude, so I took advantage. :D ) She talked to Montaron and Xzar and sent them on their way, but not before accepting a healing potion from Xzar. While heading over to the ambush site, Jade was attacked by a wolf, which she finally killed with her bow. She was forced to drink another healing potion, since the wolf had reduced her to 1 hit point (talk about a close call). Jade was able to scrounge some gold and an angel skin ring from the bodies. She grabbed a diamond she had noticed twinkling in a tree, and continued her journey to Friendly Arm Inn.

In the area south of the Friendly Arm, she grabbed the Ring of Protection +1 from a rock and promptly encountered another wolf (today is not her lucky day). Jade swallowed the potion of speed, then managed to keep enough distance between herself and the wolf while she shot it, so that she never took a hit. After that, I decided to go after the ogre. It took a lot of running and shooting, but he finally went down. Jade prompty equipped the girdle of piercing. Jade explored the area a bit and shot some gibberlings, xvarts, and a kobold. After that, she headed north to the inn.

After several re-loads, I realized Jade could not face Tarnesh at this point, so I decided to save him for later. Jade shot all the hobgoblins and returned Joia's ring for some nice XP and a rep boost, then grabbed the Ring of Wizardry from its stash. Jade is now level 2. She also scribed a Burning Hands scroll and a Larloch's Minor Drain scroll she had found on the hobgoblin bodies.

Jade headed to Beregost. Once there, she calmed down Marl and ran Firebeard's book errand. The XP was enough to level Jade up to 3. She rested in Feldepost's Inn, and after getting the cursed Girdle of Masculinity/Femininity and the Ring of Wizardry identified, sold her stash for a decent amount of gold. She talked to Garrick and agreed to talk to Silke. She sided with the merchants, and stopped Silke from casting her lightning bolt with a LMD spell. Jade shot Silke a couple of times, and managed to disrupt another spell with Burning Hands. Silke nailed Jade with a Magic Missile spell before Jade finally killed her. Before talking to the merchants, Jade pickpocketed each one for a potion of defense. She now has 4 of them, along with the potion of Invulnerability and the Staff +1 from Silke. Jade headed to the Temple for some healing, then ran around Beregost checking the containers for gold, and robbed Kagain blind. :D She now has about 10,000 gp.

Good Luck Sojourner. My mage/thief is still at the FAI, I just started another SoA game, with a solo assassin.

I've soloed Bards on a few ocassions, and have found that it is probably the best combination of fun and challenge. The rouge leveling speed, is certainly quite nice. Out of my many solos the Bard is my favorite, but the one thing I can never finish is the final battle. To me it really doesn't matter though because just making it that far into the game is fun enough. Good luck all.

I would think bards would be an easy soloing class. They level fast, can use any weapon, spells, and of course, WANDS!

Just give the bard a wand of monster sumoning, and the final battle should be a cakewalk.

Non-cheesey, an oil of speed and good bow should make short work or Sarevok

My faforite combination, oil of speed, a good bow, and Arrows of Detonation (and maybe a potion or scroll of fire resistance)

solo motivation?

Well I've gone thru BGI countless times and this thread has motivated me to try a solo character, who is a female elven F/T (Moonrae), but my PC is currently in Beregost and I am having the old BG party indecision: it seems that the game play would much less reload-intensive if I brought one more character, I was thinking of (brave brave sir) Garrick (sir Garrick ran away ;) ) . Should I just be brave and go for the solo? I've never done it, but have glided through with 3 person parties (eg. f/m, Monty, viccy). Assuming good fight stragegy, just how reload-intensive is soloing in BGI?

I would definitely recommend trying a solo game. I didn't reload any more often than usual when soloing, but there are some battles that I didn't feel the need to attempt (such as the Red Mages and Spiders on the map far to the east).

Using a F/T should be fairly straight forward. You might even try a F/M/T since leveling up will be quicker due to lack of party members. Early on your mage skills will be fairly useless so you might as well wear armor. After awhile you can find (or aford to buy) bracers and such to replace the armor. And you can use wands and other mage-specific items all along. If you want to get your feet wet soloing, this would be the way to go IMHO.

thanks and a new question

Thanks JackofClubs,

I think I'll do the f/m/t. Magic is the thing I felt was missing, its a big part of my strategy. Only one weapon slot is a workable hamper. I have the XP-cap remover, so life should get pretty fun. I've been interested in soloing for a long time because my PC is typically the linchpin at all the big fights. I'll bet a f/m/t could take out EVERYONE (sarevok last) at the final battle (muahahaha)... I'll start today :D

Here is a question:
How do you lift the arrow-stack restriction? 40 like BGII and some of the +1 arrows found in BGI would be great (or even more like in Stilgar's thread). I do not yet have shadowkeeper, but may soon download it.

FMT should rock once you get Spider's Bane and Web.

I have only progressed a little in my game as a mage/thief, but I am almost done with my SoA solo assassin.

I am thinking of starting another solo game too, maybe an Enchanter or an Invoker.
