Oh really? From what I have heard, a large majority of people consider the 'Old Country' as the United Kingdom at large. And I'm only joking, as I have a considerable amount of respect for the US, always have done, and I do consider the tie between the two nations to be much closer than apparent, when a question was asked on Question Time in NY by a US citizen that said the British only joined the US for national limelight, I nearly flipped my lid as the group of US booed him down. Bloody marvelous!

Sorry - if you say "Old Country" to me I think Eastern Europe, at least from where my Dad grew up - when I was at Ellis Island once, I had a good look at this board showing which nationalities of immigrants went to which states. The numbers are quite staggering - I don't remember them, but for example there was one state where about 60% of the inhabitants were Polish in origin...

OK, I apologise, only meant as a joke. Don't take me seriously. I'm tired and in a foul mood.

Likewise. I got teary-eyed when your Prime Minister (or whatever it is you call your president) gave his post 9/11 speech with the "stand shoulder to shoulder with those damn Yanks" bit (to paraphrase).

Don't worry, I hate "football" too.

As a card-carrying Englishman, would you care to explain the difference between England, the UK, and Britain? What of Normans, Saxons, and Celts? Do you claim the Welsh, Scots, and N. Irish? Or are they like Iowegians are here? I'm not sure if I've it all straight, and I figured I'd get it straight from the horse's, er, mouth.

Skoot - the Welsh and Scottish are trying to do something called devolution - that is, have their own governments and not be ruled from far-off London. The Irish - well you probably know about that, they're in a mess. As usually happens between larger nations and smaller nations, the English have nothing against the Welsh, Scottish, or Irish, but in many cases they absolutely detest England. Kinda like the relationship between the general populace of Britain and the US, actually...

As for your other question, no, we don't treat separate caucasian racial backgrounds differently at all - the subject of "ethnic minorities" (how I hate that term) is somewhat more touchy, especially right now. But white origin? Noone cares at all.
