Is it supposed to end this way? (spoiler?)

Post by Abecedarian »

Well, I just finished BGII for the first (and perhaps last) time, and I want to ask if someone can tell me what happened in the final fight.

I thought I would have to go into Jon's room so I inserted the fifth gem without first getting ready for a battle--no protective spells or anything. Of course, Irenicus immediately materialized with his demons. I figured all was lost and almost reloaded rather than watch my party be butchered. However I decided to see what would happen. I tried to have Aerie cast Pro. from Evil, Imoen use her Timestop scroll, Branlor (my Berserker) cast Enraged, etc.

As the battle started Aerie was killed at once and I didn't even tell anyone to attack Irenicus, who was protected, until Imoen could try to take down his defenses. However, what then happened was that the Pit Fiend seemed to keel over, the screen changed, Irenicus exclaimed he was dead, and lo and behold I was in the victory sequence with Ellesime praising all of us. And that was that. (I was disappointed that the game then ends--I wanted to go back to Athkatla and do a few things.)

SO: does this always happen? Is there no real final fight? Did Joneleth commit suicide, or die of a heart attack? Did my party's reputation of 20 kill him with our goodness? Or did I benefit from a bug? What in heck happened? I swear we never did any damage to him, and I can't see why we would not have all been killed quickly if the fight had continued.

Yeah, that's a bug. The final battle with Irenicus in hell *is* tougher than the one on the Tree of Life.

Never heard of this bug before, though...

lol

the only thing i can think of is one of your char's must of had some kinda spell turning activated and it "bounced" some lethal effect to irenicus. or it's a bug.

i can only say this, the first time i went through that battle jono def did not die easy.

Well, my main character was wearing the Cloak of Mirroring, so I suppose Irenicus might have Disintegrated himself, but he had cast some protections first. I dearly wish I could have had time to read the messages at the bottom of the screen before the game ended. A bug seems likely, but surely someone else would have experienced it, not just me. Very strange. But I'm not complaining.

Sounds like a bug to me. I almost gave up at the final battle because I was finding it so hard.

There were three pit fiend thingies (1 Glabrezuses and 2 Balors) to kill and JonI, who casts stun, fear and hold.

He then turned into a slayer and teleported around the chamber casting mislead.

I left the game out of frustration then game back to it after playing IWD HoW in heart of fury mode....I then completed the final battle of BG2 in 25 minutes!

But it was not easy... ;) You could not see my parties faces for all the protection spells/potions etc, and the amount of healing that was going on was removing two characters at a time from the battle. I tried fighting as slayer, and as a stalker - everything.

It took three months of baddy bashing in heart of fury to walk into this battle and wipe up.

I thought it was quite a good final battle - more testing than BGI (though not as bad as IWD HoW) and ten times better than P:T.

Just my own opinion... :D
