A basilisk is a lizard creature and if it makes the right move, it can and will turn you to stone. For this reason alone, they are a high level creature. With their scaled skin, its like a piece of armor, so they also tend to have many hitpoints. These creatures made appearences in BG1 and were a total nightmare to deal with.
