Fireshield, any good?

Post by Xyx »

Seems like a complete waste of a potential Stoneskin, Greater Malison, Emotion or Polymorph Other slot to me...

It gives resistance. So what, you still need another 50% before you're safe.

It damages your attackers. Only if they actuall hit you (I wouldn't want this to work too often). Does pathetic damage even then. You'd have to get hit about 20 times to drop even one creature dangerous enough to warrant casting a level 4 spell.

Still, lots of people seem to swear by it...

I agree. Fireshield sucks because it only works if you get hit, something I would not let happen. The only time I can think of this spell being useful is if you were playing a fighter/mage dual or multi and were using it during melee. But other than that I don't think my mage has any business being hit in the first place. I went from chapter 2 to chapter 6 without ever being hit once iirc.

Correction I mean with out ever taking damage.

For awhile, I had Imoen's contingency set to trigger a Fireshield, if she became unconscious or held. This allows your allies to lay down healing without injury, but any enemies attacking will take damage, hopefully slowing them down long enough for aid to arrive. I don't think it's an end-all beat-all spell, but when used in conjunction with other defensive spells can be quite helpful.
One thing I would love to see added to the game would be additional parameters for setting up your contingency spells. In PnP, the favorite contingency for us was definitely Stoneskin, triggered by, you guessed it, losing your last stoneskin.

I'd never dream of filling my Contingency with Fireshield... There's much more useful stuff out there. Besides, Fireshield doesn't slow anything down, it just deals some damage.

50% Hit Points reached pretty much equates to you just having lost your last Stoneskin :)

I think it is possible to add new contigencies...there is a 2da file involved for contingecies:
CONTCOND.2da

2DA V1.0
4294967296
STRREF DESCRIPTION CONDITION
1 31112 30972 HIT
2 30973 30974 SEEENEMY
3 30975 30976 HPLT50PERCENT
4 30982 30983 HPLT25PERCENT
5 30984 30985 HPLT10PERCENT
6 30986 30987 HELPLESS
7 30988 30989 POISONED

The strref is the dialog tlk string reference number(for a description),the other number is the actual words in string reference number (like See Enemy), the condition is the triggering condition.

I think by adding addition lines like TookDamage (to the condition), and even checking the amount of stoneskins might be possible. (CHECKSTATLT,1,STONESKINS might work not sure). You would need to find a description though, you could also add it yourself with IEEPro.

I think the game automatically adds the 'Myself' parameter us scriptors are used to...ONly way to find out is to try and edit the .2da and see what happens...
