Yeslick or Jaheira?

Post by Pagans Faery »

Well, who do you prefer - Yeslick or Jaheira?
I'm really new to this game, and now I'm in doubt. I'm in the cloakwood mines, and is now to decide if I want to take Yeslick in my party and skip another character (Jaheira?)

My party is:
A Cleric/fighter +
Imoen
Kivan
Jaheira
Minsc
Dynaheir

I didn't include Coran in my party (instead of Imoen?) 'cause I heard (somewhere) that he was not good at finding traps - was that a "fault"? I knew where he was and passed him by without talking to him - can I make him join up later perhaps?

PF :)

Since you're a cleric/fighter I wouldn't take Yeslick.
But I wouldn't take Jaheira either.
I always only have 1 clreic/druid type in my party.
Maybe Quale is a good option (you'll meet him at the entrance of baldur's gate) or Ajantis (paladin that you meet at the ankeg sector)

Good luck

The really short answer to NPC choices is: please yourself. You can do the game with succesfully with a wide variety of parties, and no one party is necessarily the best.

But, anyway, I'd keep Imoen, as she is a very good rogue - Yeah Coran's 20 Dex is cool, but...pfft, Immie all the way IMAO, especially as you control her skill ups from the beginning (almost), and she's, like, your sibling, eh?

fwiw, I played a similar party to yours entirely of twosomes in BG
Me, also Ftr/Cleric
Imoen
Jaheira
Khalid
Minsc
Dynaheir

I thought it worked pretty well, despite Dynaheir's intense suckiness. (Yes, Khalid IS annoying, but with decent gear, he really is a kickass melee) You could susbstitute Xzar & Montaron and/or Eldoth & Skie and still maintain that approach, but to answer your main question, I liked having two multiclass priests a LOT. It helps if you have TotSC installed, as the higher EXP cap really favors dual & multi-classed characters.

My playstyle is fairly melee-heavy, so it worked well - beat the stuffing out of whatever you're fighting, and then have the priests heal up after, as well as buffing/debuffing and summoning the odd pet.

Some NPCs can join at any time (like Kagain), but for most it's now or never - generally, you want to get your party together as soon as practical in any case, so that they all level together.

Hope this helps!

Stilgar > Thanks for the welcome :)

I like to have a couple of Cleric in the party to heal the characters when I have to go in close to the enemies. Usually I just throw everything I got towards the "bad guys" before I come close. Well, maybe I'm a coward, but it works *L*.
I think I'll keep Jaheria, as my maincharacter is a dwarf just like Yeslick..

Anyone got some more "advice"?

Advice?

IMO, ditch Jaheira, her stat's aren't that cool and she's a multiclass, as yourself so this makes your exp gathering a little slow.
Dunno if you can still get Branwen, but she's a full blown cleric with some nice stat's a hot figur and an accent that burns you everytime the hand in the sky touches her.

Coran<->Imoen, not realy the choice you should be making, when I play, I choose to have them opposite each other, Coran filling the blanks I leave in Imoen character building.
So if you think he could fitt in, you could trade him for Kivan perhaps.....

But on the other hand, the game is the most fun if you play on the basis of character and not on stat's.
So, yeslick is good fun, even stat's, doesn't whine like jaheir.
Coran is cool, and if you Saffana in your party, the dialogue is great.
And as my room-mate Stilgar pointed out, Quale's cool to play with.

Owh and I don't know if you know this...being new and all, but....

If you want the best cleric in this (and any other) game, get Viconia!
Yeslick is an allright character, but he might be a bit too similar to your pc.
Jaheira has her disadvantages but from a role-playing perspective it might be nice to keep her. She was Gorions friend and is now yours.
Btw, Pagan, do you have BG2 (if not, go get it!)? Jaheira is one of the npc's who will return in the sequel, and if you keep her in your party now it'll be a nice touch.

I would say it really depends on the rest of your parties alignment. If you can put up with Jaheira's b*tching when (or if) your rep goes up, then she's a good coice. If your rep doesn't get to high then she should remain silent. I personally can't stand it when my party doesn't get along so I ususally pick up Branwen and change her allignment from true neutral to neutral good with my gate keeper. Otherwise she does a fair amount of b*tching her self. I could also do this with Jaheira but I just don't like her personality very much...lol. My party is usually as follows.
My Ranger
Minsc
Ajantis
Coran (whom I personally love)
Branwen
Dynahier

This party seems to work well for me. However, I just recently figured out that Yeslick was a fighter druid. All this time for some reason I thought he was only a fighter so I never picked him up. Since his allignment is good I think next time I play, I'll just pick him up and dump branwen rather than changing her allignment.

My advice is to just have fun with it and if you remove someone you're not sure about, just save your game on another slot.

Coran doesn't work well with traps, but I took him in my Cleric pary because I could cast find traps.

Coran has a whopping dex. of 20 and with a composite longbow plus the bracers of Archery, plus his racial bonus of being a elf.

He rocks!!! (I believe his thac0 is now 3 :D :D :D )

Yeslick is no Fighter/Druid but a Fighter/Cleric. And mixing alignments can be great fun...

He also has *** in Bows, despite being a multiclass (** maximum by the rules). Then give him the Tome of Dex for another +1 To Hit...

My bad, I guess I'm a bit more confused than I thought...lol

Coran is great especially after he levels in thieving. I love the way he flirts with my mage :p

Welcome to GameBanshee forums, Pagans and Melisah. :)

If it were in BG2, I always have cleric and druid (multi/dual class), because they are so different. But, in BG1, I don't see much difference between them, and Jaheira's Wisdom (which gives you extra spells) is probably the worst of all the priests available.

I'd say Yeslic instead of Jaheira if that's choice I have to make. If you want another cleric to add to your healing power, I'd go for Branwen. With descent armour (I always give her Ankheg), she can melee pretty well, especially she can summon spiritual hammer 3 times a day.

Here's a better idea

Kill off Dynaheir and get rid of her. Send Dynaheir to die and kick her out of your party. Minsc will stay with the party and remain perfectly content, and you can replace Dynaheir with a worthwhile party member...like Coran.

An easier way

There's an easier way to drop Dynaheir take her into a room where you don't plan to return - without Minsc - and disband her. This would also work if you wanted to disband Khalid or Jaheira or single members of any of the piars.

Ahum, have you seen Dynaheir throw Magic Missiles with a Ring of Wizardry on each hand? You want even be able to see them all in her spell book, as the exceed the slots available...

You want the game's best Thief? Bring along Shar-Teel and dual her to Thief after level 3 (when you give her *** in Short or Long Sword, at your preference). Even as late in the game as Chapter 5, she's still on par with my best Fighter. Besides being able to backstab x3, open all locks and find all traps...
