will Kagain leave a good party?

Post by ZeuS »

Newby reporting here & has a question (based on a stupid deed indeed ):
I have a good aligment party , nice dudes, with one exception : Kagain, (lawful evil) He's the "Hit man" so to speak & takes the casulties as frontman of my in the battles. The rest sits back nd shoots arrows and throws all other stuff at my opponents.
For me he's The Super fighting Dwarf !!

XP gained, reputation steadly climbing to heroic proportions, Kagain licks.. sorry ...heals it wounds .....& voila everybody is happy :)
so far so good.

But what happened :
Today I was playing a LOT ( gee what an addictive game )
I found out about the quick-safe button and made a lot of progress ,until in chapter 4 I roamed through CLoakwood. A perso named Coran came up to me and offered to join my squad of scoundrels. Of course I could not refuse & dicided to head back to Berehost to temporarilly dismiss of my compagnion Kagain .
( he needed a well deserved rest in my opinion)

He murmeled something about : "my reputaiuon is lost" or something like that & off he went.
At first I didnot pay any attention to it , but after finishing the chapter & finishing some side quests ( hours.. hours hours later & only quick-safing all the time..STUPID) I kind a felt sorry for Kagain & tried to look for him.....................
but ...nowhere.. nowhere to be found..........
Where is he?? Will he return?

Was my whole day playing BD ruined? or will he eventually return?

Would he have, in the long run, left anyway?
Will all NPC's leave eventually an opposite alligned party (in future chapters? )
So in other words, was Kagain doomed anyway & would it be smarter for me to get a good dude in the first place instead of Kagain?

Has it got a LOT to do with Reputation?

Note: I dropped him when my reputation was at 20 in a Good Alligned party.

Will I totally start over whith him again or should I ïnvest my XP's in a guy that will stay with you?

One thing i did learn : Quick safe is nice but after finishing a map ALWAYS safe "normal".

That's a long first post,
welcome to the board.

To answer you're question,
yes he would leave you, but he should be standing where you left him.

It all has to do with reputation,
if you're reputation gets above then 17, you're evil party members will leave (killing a begger makes you're reputation drop 1).
Good party members will leave when you're reputation drops below 4. (you can get +1rep for certain donations in a church, see the manual for a list)

But when you kick a member out of the team, it should stay where you left him/her, even if you're allignment gets higher / is to high.

Also, try to gather a party ASAP, and stick with that party, and when you meet someone new, save, and see if he/she is better then one of you're current members (also in level) and then decide to keep him/her or reload.
I usually decide what party I want before I play, but i know all the NPC's from previous games.
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

Euhm, It's not always true that killing a beggar drops your Rep by just one.
Killing the beggar in Nashkel gave me a minus what-not.
So SAVE BEFORE YOU KILL ANYTHING.
Owh don't KILL PEASANTS in bars or anything, the bar will turn on you and it will make resting there a lot of trouble.

"Here we fight and here we'll stay..."

One caveat

The reputation thing is also affected by Charisma - if you use one of the high CHA items on your main, you can keep characters who otherwise would leave....they'll grouse constantly, and periodically SAY they're leaving (I particularly like Edwin's), but they won't. At least, I'm sure this works in SoA, and I believe it works in BG/TotSC.

Also, sometimes who will/won't join can just be funky - when I (Inziladun, M LE Dwarven Fighter/Cleric) tried to recruit Minsc, he told me his hamster didn't like me  - I switched Jaheira to leader & he joined right up, so go figure. Viconia wouldn't come along either, even after we killed her assailant, ungrateful wench.

Getting your party together early and sticking with it has its merits, but you can always screw around some with trying out which members work well for you. For example, Korgan ought to be a pretty solid melee, and seems to work really well for most people, but I never have any luck with him, he gets the tar knocked out of him in fights when he should be kicking butt & taking names. The really fun thing in BG is that there are three paired NPCs - Jaheira/Khalid, Minsc/Dynaheir and Coran/????, where it's pretty much both or none, which makes the party selection process a little trickier. (Yes, you can use cheese techniques to get only one, but...Bah!)
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

They know eachother but they are not paired NPC's (IIRC)
You can have them seperate in you're party.

charisma - reputation

Thanks for the answers
Wow, I am amazed how much effort the programmers put into this project
It seems, to me at least ,indeed it has got to do with AND charisma AND reputation .

I am no D&D gamer (I knew the game existed, but never knew the ins & outs well never knew the outs of it also :-) ) . In board game D&D and it's spinn off's, is there also suchs a thing as reputation /charisma & do they interact with eachother as well?

Nope. Eldoth and Skie are a pair. Skie will not join the party unless Eldoth is there. If you kick one of them out, the other goes also.

@ZeuS: There is such a thing as charisma in pen & paper D&D and it does govern reactions of NPCs, among other things. However, reputation is an invention of BioWare. It serves as a sort of simplified alignment (but not very effectively IMHO). A better system was used in Black Isle's PlaneScape:Torment where your actions were actually evaluated on a Law/Chaos axis as well as Good/Evil. I imagine this was simply more work than BioWare wanted to undertake, and even PS:T was never followed up.

That 'll be the reason why I didn't recognise it.
Although it does have a very handy ability, I don't think I would use it in combat.
Most mages you come past are not that hard, even the final mages are just hard because of the number of high level enemy's in the hall.

Nope, I'll take the world's edge or Asheenda's Hammer.
