Hello,
Im a newb to Morrowind. I have about 5 hours under my belt but only half of those on my current character, I rerolled after making a bad choice during my first creation. Im playing a Brenton Adventurer specializing in Magic. My skills include all of the magic schools, as well as Speechcraft(Magor), Alchemy(Minor), and Unarmored(Minor).
Currently Im at lvl 5 and have made Journeyman in the Balmora Mage Guild. I havnt gone beyond the area of Balmora yet(I tried and got my butt handed to me, but that was at lvl 1). I have a few newb questions and would greatly appreciate any suggestions that can be offered:
1) Making Cash-What are good ways to make cash in the Balmora area, and in Morrowind in general? Besides snatching stuff out of unguarded rooms Sofar Ive managed to steal a buttload of Soul Gems from the Mages guild when the girl upstrairs goes downstairs to take to Ajira. Got a 6,000 and a 60,000 soul gem that Im hanging onto, sold the rest.
2) Spell Making-Ive heard you can make your own spells. I am intrigued, how?
3) I think the robe and clothing selection in Morrowind is a bit skimpy. Where can I download some good mods to improve selection?
4) Any Magic skill raising tips?
5) Any hints or tips in general(without spoilers please) would be nice
Some Questions
Oh yeah, one more thing:
6) Are the guilds of Morrowind seperated by towns? Or all one guild? I mean, is the Balmora Mage Guild and independant entity, and so if I go to another city I will be a stranger to them? Or are all the Mage Guilds part of one Order, and so I could go into any Mage guild and hold my same rank and status?

Hello, and welcome to GameBanshee.
All the Mages Guilds are under one order, so you are still journeyman in, say, Caldera. You can think they are branches... The Mage's Guild Balmora branch, Caldera branch, Ald'rhun branch and so on. It also applies to Thieves Guild and Fighter's Guild. BTW, you can join all of them (there are also Temple, Imperial Legion, Imperial Cult, and Morag Tong, and one of great houses), though some quests may conflict each other. (if you want to know, use search button at the top, or ask in the other thread)
The making money is 1) do quests and receive reward; 2) search caves/tombs/mines; 3) create potions and sell them to alchemists etc. Just explore and find smugglers caves is probably the best way.
To create spells, first you need to find NPC who can create spells for you. Unlike alchemy and enchant, you cannot do that by yourself.
To raise your magic stats, you should either pay trainers to train with them, or just use it as often.

General tip
Using Misc. Skills to your advantage:
Your misc. skills are probably the least important to you character from an RPG standpoint and they don't help you level up, but they are useful.
My personal pref for training is not to train my major/minor skills. It makes the game too easy as gold is abundant and the character becomes very powerful, very quickly. On the other hand, I do take advantage of trainers for misc skills to increase my level up bonuses. For example, my latest character is a Ranger/Thief type who has no use for heavy or medium armor (or any other skill related to Endurance). So she will never receive level up bonuses to endurance w/o training. I train 10 levels of a combination of misc skills which are all related to the same attribute after each leveling, that way, i will receive a X5 bonus in the attribute of my choice when I level again. (In addition, since misc skills start so low, it is quite inexpensive to train them.)
I realize this is somewhat contrary to my pref of abstaining from training major/minors etc. to avoid becoming too powerful. Any training will increase you power faster than normal, I just got tired of being killed by mudcrabs due to low HP and having no hope of increasing my HP (significanly) in the future.

1) Making Cash - join the Thieves Guild and do their jobs. Habasi pays you some nice money. The Mage and Fighter Guilds will also pay you some cash (or give you stuff you can sell). Collect ingredients, get yourself a mortar and make potions to sell. (This will also have the added bonus of improving your alchemy skill.) Raid all the Mage and Fighter Guild Supply Chests (using the Guild Guide transport system to get to them) and sell the stuff - this will give you some early spending money. (Keep the soul gems.) At the start of the game, you can make some easy money by solving the murder case in Seyda Neen.
2) You need to find an NPC with Spell-Making as an option, and you need to already know some spells. Virtually every branch of the Mage Guild and the Temple has an NPC who can do this. See page 38 of the game manual for details.
3) You can check out the links to unofficial sites at Bethesda's web site.
4) Yes - buy or create low-level spells which don't use much magicka and use them repeatedly - like Soultrap, Almsilvi & Divine Intervention for Mysticism, Night-Eye for Illusion, etc.
5) Save often.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

use spell making npcs, the easiest one to find is in balmora mage guild, the snooty high elf old lady.
the game actually comes with fleabite spell, which does little damage but used often will give you training in destuction spells...use that as template to make your own spells for small mysticism and restoration spells...make small spells that use little mana, and has little effect, but will give you training..
enchantment, make some items that restore like about 1 hit point, and use often...using any enchanted item will raise skill points...and enchantment is actually better in many ways than any of the magic skills...
