I'm planning on making a multiclass rogue and would appreciate some input from those who have some experience with it (I've always just used the rogue's provided by the game, yes I know, very sad).
I'm trying to decide between creating either:
1) ranger1/roguex
2) barb1/ranger1/roguex
I guess what I'm asking is whether people think that having 1 level in barb is worth the exp penalty. Also, how much slower does a exp penalized char level up than say a char with an ECL penalty and which feats would you recommend (for example is hamstring worth it, or if taking barb would you really need dash).
On a side note, if making a pure drow rogue, would there be any purpose for taking Imp. evasion considering you already have magic resistance? Thanks.
barb/ranger/rogue
barb/ranger/rogue
We ask, "Are you the enemy?" and if they say, "Yes" we shoot them.

Depends on your race - a human or half elf would not have any xp penalty with a barb1/ranger1/roguex char- neither would a halfling - in all three races the rogue would be the favored class and not count toward xp penalty - ranger and barb levels would be the same - therefore no xp penalty.

With your halfling rogue go all the way with ranger 1 and barb. 1; both have good benefit that fit with the rogue: rang. for 2WF (plus racial enemy) and barb. for extra speed and rage (plus for both extra hp and increase in BAB); I don't see great advantage with the monk: you will be wearing a sort of armour, so no Wis bonus to AC, you already have evasion, so the only advantage is the higher movement rate, like the barb., without the other advantage of the barb.
As long as you keep the lev. of the other classes between 1-2 you don't get exp. penalty, so you could also consider to add a coupple of lev. of fighter for 2 extra feats anf for a more melee orientet character and/or one lev. of bard for the song and possibility to use the bard-only items.
A built like rang.1/barb.1/fighter2/bard1/rogueX is a very interesting character and you are not giving away too much rogue abilities (you are losing 5 level only, not very different from fighter4/rogueX), also because bard and ranger all have typical rogue skills as class skills.
