Just have a few questions about my thief. He is a 14th level thief and i am wondering how do i get him to backstab better if possible, and also do i have to be hidden in shadows. Can you backstab while invisible. What the hell is quaffs potion that i see other thiefs taking, i want some!

Unless you're playing an assassin, the 5x backstab he currently has will be as good as he gets.
Yes, you have to be hidden from sight. That can be done by Hide in Shadows or by any means to turn invisible (invisibility potions, invisibility ring, Ring of Gaxx, let a mage cast it, etc.). That should answer two questions at once.
They're probably quaffing invisibility potions to backstab you. If you want to backstab over and over again in sight of your enemies without running, quaffing potion after potion is the only way to do it.
