not much of a rock fan, but I also looove VAST, and if you like them, Devin Townsend is the man. a once clinically insane man (honestly), but bloody good nonetheless.

I think I'm getting the message...

...why people haven't mentioned The Beatles and The Rolling Stones...

I think that they are even more antiquated than fable's Rennaisance. ;) :D

Damn I had hoped that Sleep or in the more rare chance Georgi posted their tastes so I could just agree with them. I'm not listing mine down, do love the Beatles though Mah ;)

Currently listening to Zwan, because their album just came out and I finally got around to getting it.

Kinda hard to talk about Rock...

...without mentioning the Fab Four. I do love most of their songs. :)

Elvis? Did somebody mention Elvis? :p

Seriously, I'm much of a New Wave fan like Trigger --- however, are they truly classified as Rock? What are the different forms of Rock. Lintel mentioned Punk Rock, then there's Heavy, Light...

So here are the things youd expect to be on my list...

Depeche Mode
The Police
New Order

The Fixx
Tears For Fears
Talking Heads
The Cure
The Church

(Though those last 2 are 80's music, they typically arent my style, but good stuff)

So that encompasses New Wave, Goth, Dark Wave, and Industrial.

Strange...in every CD store I go to, all of the above are in the "Rock" section. :p :D

@Robbie Awesome. I loved VAST's first album. Of the 12 tracks, I believe I like 9 of them. Quite worth buying. Their second album was sort of pants though...

Hey anyone here know who "Third eye blind" are? I don't think I've seen them mentioned up there (maybe in Taco's post but I don't like to look through all of them  ), they've got quite good stuff, nothing extra spectacular but their lyrics are a bit..... strange I belive the word is....... :D (check the lyrics thread for examples :D ) ;)

*shivers....*

First off Lyntel... Lag Wagon and the Clash should never be in the same list.... ... ..

Alright I will admit Im a ****y bastard when it comes to music... here I go.

If you want the purists form of best "Rock" "Band" I would have to look back to the BO diddly to the Otis Reddings or better yet Chubby Checker or Elvis. Then again you have to pay respect to artists Like Marty Robbins or Johnny Cash, more on Johnny for giving an Image. (BTW any fans of Johnny check out the video he made for his cover to Nine Inch Nails "Hurt")

If your looking for all out rock and freakin roll you have to not look for the predasscers (how horrible is that spelled) but the perfectionists. The talents of such Stevie Ray Vaughns, Hendrix, CLapton... those guitarists touched on many levels... but then again you cant ignore the Presence of such bands like the Who, The Stones, Skynard, Led Zepplin. Rock and freakin Roll there.

I always recommend for people to check out Eric Burdon and the Animals as well, being Eric one of the best white guys to bellow out in blues.

I will disregard the beatles, I blame all the boy bands on them. Hatred.

Now you look at todays music and I see a trend that scares me to death. There is no more rock and roll, no jazz, no rap. Its all POP everything BLENDS. So I disregard todays bands because thier not rock, thier pop. Albiet spare the few that dont hit complete radio play from Kroq and MTV crap.

Now I want to dive into punk.

Sum 41/Blink 182/PennyWise are not "punk". Punk (sure its my opinion, but mine is better than yours so there) was an Ideal NOT a genre. Elvis was punk. When Dylan went electric he was punk, THE WHO were punk. Blink 182 is not punk. Punk rock was horrible music played really fast and expressed the emotions of a people (much like eairly gangster rap when it was sung by gangsters not popstars). Other than bands like The Clash most punk was horrific and just played the same three cords over and over again. *cough ehem Ramones* It wasn't the music alone, it was the message and the anger that was played through it that made it real. It was the point to challenge and change, not the mohawks and the cool belts.

You want some great albums grab some Iggy and the Stooges perhaps some Clash or if you want something more familiar Bad Religon, Social Distortion, Rancid (Better when they were Operation Ivy and better than Lars and the Bastards and much better than the Transplants)

I also believe the mention of bands I like just purely for the emotion through them. Try Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, the Pouges and more when I think.

Alright I'll shut up.

Queensryche Operation: Mindcrime is one of the best cd's ever.

Not really rock, but; Omar and the Howlers, Popa Chubby, Chris Duarte, Gary Moore all great blues/rock.

Oh I heard this one CD by a band I've never gotten into, but I loved the cd. It was Dream Theaters "Seasons" or something like that.

Also for a good "Punk" band I recommend Joy Division. Or better yet go see 24 Hour Party People.

Excellent list.

W.A.S.P....are they still around? I remember them from high school... :D

My list:

Hard/fast stuff: Slayer, Venom, Celtic Frost, old Metallica (1986 and earlier), Exodus...

Hard rock: AC/DC (Back in Black and earlier), Black Sabbath, Dio, old Ozzy Osbourne (Bark at the Moon and earlier), Man O War, David Chastain, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Iron Maiden (Powerslave and earlier), Judas Priest (Screaming for Vengeance and earlier), Def Leppard, Krokus, Grim Reaper, Demon, Blue Oyster Cult, the Scorpions...

Refined Stuff: Rush, Kansas, The Police (not exactly hard rock, but they're good :D ), King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Midnight Oil...

Offbeat/punk rock: The Sex Pistols (awesome band), The Clash, The Dead Kennedys, Black Flag...

Blues rock: Lynyrd Skynrd, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kenny Wayne Shepherd (IMO, Jimi Hendrix reborn), the Allman Brothers, George Thorogood, Golden Earring, Foghat, Thin Lizzy...

I feel old. My memory is failing me; this is but the tip of the iceberg. :(

@Chanak nice list.

I'd say Black Flag as well but the original incarnation with keith(kevin?) rather than with Mr. Rage Henry Rollins. DK is great but Jello sold his buddies out and tentacle records sucks. (Saw Jello do a Spoken word once... scary scary man)

I feel as If I should be shot for forgetting AC/DC in my list...

I'm not sure that Joy Division are punk (perhaps that was the intention of the speech marks?) I think they defy categorisation, excellent though.

Ultimate rock album imo has to be Raw Power by Iggy and the Stooges, just fantastic!
