Am I Evil????

Post by Taco Magus »

Ok im having major problems.

Ive taken an all evil party threw SoA 2 times and onces threw ToB.
Ive tried taking a good party threw SoA several times threw the same area i went threw as my evil party and i get totaly killed.
Am I just that evil or am I cursed?

Evil Party: Me kensai/thief, Korgan, Edwin, Vic

Good Party: kensai/theif, Keldorn, Minsc, Arie, Jan, Anomen

You're evil, why torture youreself by taking amonem.

Maybe it's because you're first tries where with the evil party.
You have only 4 characters in you're evil party, with the best NPC's in the game, an because their are less characters you're an higher level (I found myself using highlevel spells in difficult fights, I assume you do the same)

When you play good, you have more NPC's so you level up slower, and they are less powerfull, so the game is more difficult.
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

There are various factors that could affect a fight's outcome, but alignment is not one of them imho :D

Facts are, the characters of your first (evil) party are all technically "superior" than those of the second...
I mean:
Aerie and Jan are *never* going to cast as many or as high-level mage spells as Edwin. Try to pick up Tashia or Kelsey if you want to kick monsters' asses with a Good spellcaster.

Same for Anomen vs. Viconia. I would suggest Jaheira instead (as a druid, she levels up faster and gets useful spells like Ironskin, Insect Swarm, Summon Fire elemental). And don't forget that Anomen's career as a fighter is already over when you start the game, while Jaheira is going to keep leveling up (THAC0...).

Sad thing to say, same for Minsc vs. Korgan. The Dwarf has more Rages and has Grandmastery
But I have no suggestions for a replacement... and I like Minsc so I'd say keep him.
(I usually override him as a Barbarian to even the scores)

I would also suggest to leave Keldorn at home (to allow the others to level up faster) but that's just me...
Where we came from, we don't know
Where we're going.... (even worse)
And about who we could be, we actually have trouble in clearly defining the term "to be" in the first place...

Hmm...

Maybe you are evil....just remember "Say it now and say it LOUD / I am evil and I'm proud"

It seems to me some NPCs just don't work for some players. Everyone says Korgan is a super melee, but he always turns out squishy when I have him in my parties. I look at Korgan's stats - he ought to be great - but I just can't keep him from dying. Why? I dunno - I don't like him at heart, I guess.

It seems to me that all the possible NPCs can make really valuable additions to a party. Play a party you like, and you'll do fine. My first party was a Wizard slayer plus Aerie, Jaheira, Minsc, Nalia and Yoshimo/Imoen (honestly, I just added NPCs as I met them untill the party was full) and we did fine.

Using the mages as an example: none are excluded from level 9 mage spells - some Lumification plus the right Ioun stone and any (though only one) can be upgraded to 18 INT and get access to level 9 spells. Aerie's giant spell list is just scary, particularly with the wicked combinations of cleric spells in sequencers & contingencies. On the other hand, Jan is almost a must if you aren't playing a rogue, and an amazingly versatile support character even if you are. Of course, with decent gear Edwin ends up with an obscenely huge spell lineup, and gets the hilarious Nether scroll quest to boot plus single class leveling speed. Nalia's pretty resourceful, too - her personal quests are really fun, plus she levels as fast as Edwin while actually being a semi-effective archer.

So, play the NPCs you like, and all will be well.
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

Well, if that's all..

If it's just the endings, they're all right here, under the NPCs.

Taco, I think it must be your attitude more than anything else. Like nephtu says, Korgan, for example, "ought to be great - but I just can't keep him from dying. Why? I dunno - I don't like him at heart, I guess." Apparently, since you are evil at heart, you WANT your Good characters to die. :)

You ought to know by now that there are different ways to form parties and different ways to play them. I think a three- or four- person party is optimal. And of course, some NPCs are intrinsically more powerful than others at a given level. For example, Korgan can hit harder and faster than Minsc, and Edwin can cast more spells than Imoen. Whether those differences can really turn a fight from a victory into a total defeat doesn't seem very likely to me, but if Edwin and Korgan are also a few levels higher than Minsc and Imoen, I'm sure it makes a difference. So maybe you should trim your party size and select other NPCs.

Instead of creating custom party members, I like to edit the existing NPCs to suit my purposes. For example, Minsc can be turned into a Berserker or a Barbarian. I don't know anybody who actually plays him as Ranger in the first place. To take another example, you can turn Imoen into a Swashbuckler or a Thief dualled to a Conjurer (which is what she was when I played BG1), or even a Sorceress. I've made Jan and Aerie single-class Illusionists before, and Nalia a single-class Conjurer. If you're still not happy with their spell-casting abilities (since you've been spoiled by Edwin), then maybe you can decide that Edwin's amulet should be stripped off his corpse and used by another character. (I always kill him. Doesn't everybody?) :) I mean, really, why wouldn't Imoen swipe Nalia's ring and wear it herself? :)

I'm sure you'll figure something out. You might even decide that you have no business playing a Good party. Go back to your top-secret burrito recipes and cook up something REALLY good. :)
