Twisted Rune, can we say, "buh bye!"? Spoiler-ish
Ok I need a tact for this place "bad". I'm getting ass smeared all over the wall in this place.
My final solution is to use the Protection from Magic Scroll, BUT before I get that desperate, I wanna know if anyone has a good strat for this place.
Since I only have one scroll left after Kangaxx, and I'm still in chapter 2, I would really like to save this scroll just in case of any unpleasantries ahead.

Get back here once you're in chapter 6 or so ... you now simply lack the experience, spells and equipment to deal with this chamber yet. I had this happen to me, too, got my party wiped out while only killing on or two of the bad guys.
When I got back there later, somewhere in Chapter 6, they had little to tell to me ... I plastered the walls with THEIR entrails so to speak (funny note: the female wizard in the back of the room nearly got killed by the Demon she summoned ...)
By the way, regarding this 'Twisted Rune' quest ... I have some info that might indicate the start of this quest, but I need to find that guy (or gal).
Does anyone know where to find a person named 'Koshi'?? As far as I know, he/she should be somewhere in the vicinity of either Layene, Sion or Stalman. While the first two of these names do sound familair, I don't remember where they are supposed to be ... any ideas would be appreciated!

I went in after I could cast Simulacrum and used the Protection from Magic from my simulacrum so I didn't use up the originals (see Simulacrum in strategy section).
If you want to do it now but aren't high enough level to cast Simulacrum you can buy and use a Simulacrum scroll. That way it will cost you only a Simulacrum scroll...and although they're rare, there are a lot more of them than just 2 like Protection from Magic.
Remember that Protection from Magic will only shield one character and it prevents the use of beneficial spells too. You'll need a pretty powerful fighter and you'll want Negative Plane protection (Amulet of Power or Mace of Disruption +2). It's much easier to do Twisted Rune after you come back to town, but the Staff of the Magi would be nice to have sooner.
Koshi is in the Guarded Compound in the Temple district...but why are you looking for him? Are you just trying to pick up Celestial Fury or did you get a quest to go there? I'm still trying to find quests that send you to either the compound or to Twisted Rune.

I swear it took me 3 hours and 15 tries to beat that. I was still in Chapter 3, around 11th level (Ranger). Nalia was 12th. I knew I was too low level for this but it was just so damn fun I kept trying, and in the end, when I finally beat it, only Minsc and Nalia had died. Luckily I had the Rod of Resurrection so I got them both back without losing equipment.
I had to use 2 Prot from Magic scrolls, one on myself, and one on Keldorn (I think). I just sent Keldorn with the HA +5 after the Lich, and summoned a fire ele, an aerial servant, an air elemt., and 2 bears. I protected Minsc from Neg Plane, and sent him after the dude casting Vamp fear or whatever it was. Used the summoned guys against the Beholder, lots of arrows flying everywhere. Nalia was Improved Invisible the whole time. Just keep trying, it's fun, and in the end it was worth it.

You only need one protection from magic scroll to kill both kangaxx and the twisted rune (They are the ones in the bridge district with the rouge stone, i think). The protection from magic scroll lasts for ten turns, that was plenty of time for me. I just cast it on my Cavalier and he killed kangaxx and all the twisted rune guys. I didnt even suffer a single wound. And using one protection scroll is worth it against these two battles

Or you can simply have your weak people wait for until the kangxxx is done doing his million of casting, then cast a few elementals and aeriee summons to keep the melee guys busy, then simply transform into slayer, and make sure u get the beholder first, he has death spells. Once hes done, just go high enough and wait for the cleric to cast gate, and the demon will eventually own her himself, then after that its u and the lich, i sent in keldorn with a protection from magic spell (not scroll) and his carsomyr, so his protection was so high, barely anything hurt. Amazingly, my aeriee summons do 20-40 dmg per hit, and the air and fire elements can get off nice 20 damage attacks. While my slayer just goes awald on his bootay, game over.

The following is a spoiler for a relatively low level (about 10th level) party that can be completed before running off to spellhold.

Have Yoshimo plant all his traps in the area that the lich "warps" to right after you trigger the conversation. If planting isn't successful, reload and try again. The trick here is to trigger the conversation, have everybody retreat back into that little alcove and have your thief waiting for a well timed back stab when the lich transports over. If all the traps hit, and you get a lucky backstab in, you've just taken out the toughest of the 5.
The beholder is simple, as long as you have that shield which reflects beholder rays (Shield of Balduran?) that can be bought at the adventurer's mart. That makes 2.
The warrior in all likelyhood will charge you while you're taking out the beholder. He's simple enough. Let him get close, cast hold person on him, then hack away. Only 2 to go.
The next part can be tricky. You can either wait out the mage's various protections, then backstab her with Yoshimo, or you can have her come to you with a well placed fireball / cloudkill. In some cases, the vampire will be visible, and in others, it will just stand in a corner out of the way. If it's visible when you approach the mage with Yoshimo in stealth mode, perhaps it's best to try to seperate the 2. Have Yoshimo retreat to an area where just the vampire is barely visible, but the mage is not. Fire an arrow at it, then try to retreat to where your party is waiting, back at that alcove. If you have the amulet of power, give it to your strongest non warrior / thief, and try to get the vampire to engage only them. Or, use the upgraded mace of disruption if you're lucky enough to have it. This will prevent that crappy level drain. Remember, 4 levels drained per hit means death in 3 hits unless you're over level 12.
The mage is definately the trickiest, because she will cast that nasty time stop, followed by a meteor storm and then gate once one of your party members becomes visible to her. In most cases, the summoned demon will go after her, even if you don't have protection from evil cast on your party. Somebody mentioned letting the demon kill her off. I disagree, every time I let either the demon or the vampire kill her (I saw that happen once, she cast meteor storm at my warrior and hit the vampire in the process), the item you've come all this way for (Staff of the Magi) will be destroyed. Maybe let the demon get in a few good licks, but if you don't deal the killing blow yourself, say bye-bye to one of the best weapons for your mage.

Nighthawk: the reason why I wanted to know the whereabouts of Koshi is because I found some indication he is somehow involved in the Twisted Rune thingy.
After completing the game, I took a look at the 'dialog.tlk' file in the BG II directory. It contains all the dialog in the entire game, and I searched for 'Twisted Rune'. Somewhere in the file I stumbled across the dialog of the Lich in the Twisted Rune, before he attacks. It was mixed up with the dialog of the Drizzt Encounter (how the game can correctly make up good dialogs with all that mess is a small mystery in itself). If you mentally get rid of all the Drizzt dialog texts, you are left with that of the TR Lich. One of the lines says something about Koshi, and a scroll he has supposedly written, about the TR, where it is, and how to get there.
However, since not only the Guarded Compound is also a bit weird (no obvious quest leading there), but you neither found a scroll on Koshi after killing him, I start to wonder ... did they originally plan this quest, and in the end removed it, albeit not completely?? Or can this scroll be found elsewhere??

It may be a character specific quest. You have to get the right character to the right place with the right circumstances to trigger it...I don't know.
Except that he has a really nice sword, Koshi doesn't even seem to be a major character at the guarded compound. Sion is the one that talks to you when you enter. I wonder if one of the characters knows him? It really seems like there are a lot of loose ends here and you suggestion that maybe something was planned then cut sounds like the best explanation so far.

Like all tough battles there is a trick. For the twisted rune, which I completed in Chapter 2 (character level 12-13), it was kind of neat. When I got there, I forgot that I had already used all of Yoshimo's traps. Crap! I almost gave up when I decided oh, what the hell! So here are some special things I used ...
Armor: Shield of Balduran
Spells: Death Fog, Emotion:Hopelessness
So what I did was activate the lich and then quickly walk away before he begins his evil rant. Then my mage cast Death Fog making sure the lich was in the cloud. This works despite the lich's natural resistances (you can also use Inciniary Cloud, and I'm sure some others, but Cloud Kill WILL NOT work)***. So I waited until the spell ran out (he was down to 'Badly Injured' by the way) then I gathered my melee folks around where he will teleport to (a slight cheese tactic, I know) making sure Jaheira (who had the shield of Balduran) was closest to the doorway.
Next, I sent someone out to talk to the lich after which he teleports in and I start pummeling him with the melee fighters and backstabbing with Yoshimo. Of course he begins to trigger all his protections so my I have Aerie cast breach, and Keldorn use his SUPERB Dispel Magic ... etc, etc. until he is slain.
Meanwhile, I am making sure not to move out too far into the main chamber so I stay out of reach of the Vampire and the Mage. Unfotunately, you cannot keep away from the Beholder and the Fighter (that's why I had Jaheira with the Shield of Balduran closest to the doorway). A few reflected rays and some extra 'help' from my mages and the beholder was toast. I don't even remember how I killed the Fighter but compared to the others he was trivial.
After that I took my time with the Vampire and the Mage. I happened to get lucky and I used Emotion:Hopelessess on the mage before I even saw her, so I just walzed up and beat the crap out of her and took the staff ...
***Note, make sure that whatever you do YOU DO NOT KILL the lich before he does his evil rant and teleports into the antechamber or the other bad guys will not spawn and you'll be trapped in that damn place forever!!!

Buy Vhailor's Helm and have that Simulacrum use your Scroll of Protection from Magic.I went in after I could cast Simulacrum and used the Protection from Magic from my simulacrum so I didn't use up the originals (see Simulacrum in strategy section).
If you want to do it now but aren't high enough level to cast Simulacrum you can buy and use a Simulacrum scroll. That way it will cost you only a Simulacrum scroll...
Download Infinity Explorer to read the dialogs as they appear in the game. Handy tool, quite user friendly. After completing the game, I took a look at the 'dialog.tlk' file in the BG II directory. Liches are immune to level 1-5 spells. Kangaxx in Demilich form is immune to level 1-9 spells. Should be fun once ToB comes out: Kangaxx, meet Dragon's BreathThen my mage cast Death Fog making sure the lich was in the cloud. This works despite the lich's natural resistances (you can also use Inciniary Cloud, and I'm sure some others, but Cloud Kill WILL NOT work).

The immunity must be a BG2 thing, I don't remember that from D&D rules ... I thought D-Liches just had rediculous magic resistance. I'll have to dig out some of my old books ...

If you have Nalia in your party and get involved in rescuing her from Roenall, there is a Slaver/Guard in the Sea's Bounty Tavern that has a scroll directing you to the compound in the Temple District. It's not really an "official" quest though.Originally posted by Maurice:
