Best Char Class? (my thoughts and yours)
Hm.. So, in other words, your character started with just about all 18's? Heh. For more challenge, just stick with what you roll up. Given that, fighters can be challenging.Originally posted by Leviathan:
Im currently playing a fighter/mage (9/17) dual wielding the equalizer and celestial fury. since I imported him from bg1 he has some really excellent stats... all above 18. Next time I will probably try a bard for a more challenging game.
I've finished the game with a Monk, Undead Hunter, Fighter, and Thief, and have to say that with Carsomyr the Undead Hunter was almost too powerful. The Monk was a close second, and a bad dude. Probably had the most fun with the Thief, as I relied upon the party characters more. Planning on trying a sorceror or mage next, for when I pick up ToB, so that I can take advantage of high level spells.

Being fond of rangers as I am, I took a particular liking to the archer kit.
With a ridiculous THAC0 and 9/2 attacks per round, there wasn't much that could stand in opposition of me for long! With Improved Haste, I found that approaching enemies could never, well, approach. The hit animation stops enemies in their tracks, so under constant bombardment, they could never move more than an inch or so between hits. Lovely.
I initially attempted grand mastery with long bows, but was quickly disappointed with my poor archer's performance. There are no arrows in Baldur's Gate II greater than +2 enchantment (the +4 bonus granted by Arrows of Piercing only affect THAC0 and are not considered magical arrows, therefore), so I found myself put off to the benches for many of the later battles! Short bows, unexpectedly, turned out to be my saviors. A plain short bow can be found in Irenicus' dungeon, where no other bows than those of the composite long type (requiring an 18 strength to wield) can be found. Shortly after emerging from the dungeon, Tansheron's bow can be found for sale in Trademeet (a +3 bow that generates its own ammo). And finally, the Short bow of Gesen, the grand daddy of all bows, can be had later in the game. It's a +4 weapon--able to hit any creature in the game (even golems!)--and lightning enchanted to boot! Stoneskinned mages will cease to be of any concern to you once you've gotten your hands on this bow.
I had a grand old time with my archer, and even took him into ToB with me. Sadly, Greater Whirlwind loses much of its initial appeal when you discover that your PC comes close without it!

Thiefs, no matter if they are pure multi or dual, just plain rock. Gotta love pickpocket, you'll never have to worry about cash or items. With backstab you'll never have to worry about humanoid casters, kill'n em before they even get off a spell contingency rules. Lichs will pose a problem but you daystar solves most of those problems and trap cheese will take care of those quest lichs.
I'm not a fan of the thief kits tho, except for the assasin one, but god i love multi and dual classed thiefs with mages. I don't see how you people that play chars that have backstab with a multiplier never backstab. Even with a regular katana you'll always start any and all fights with a dead mage, if the backstab doesn't do em in the next hit or two in the round certainly will, and if they don't see ya protection contingencies won't go off, and even if they do, you got about a second or so before they do go off. Wizard slayer kit? HA! More than enough time to kill em. Even if they start casting truesight you should have enough time to get behind em and cut loose before they get the spell off with haste potion/spell or boots of speed.
In combat invis spells takes backstab from a very good skill to a godly skill. Boy do i love be'n able to cast spells and attack in the same round Invis, improved invis, shadow door and the grand daddy of them all, mislead. Even non cheesy usages of mislead are godly, just run around with your clone while your theif is attack'n and you have nothing but backstab attacks till the clone gets killed or the duration of the spell runs out. Even w/o haste'n you'll put out damage that'll make a monk weep and with improved haste while dual wield'n belm..... its just sick. For soloists F/M/T is the way to go, access to all the neat fighter gear w/o high level and TOB, mage illusion spells, better thac0 and extra weapon points... phear. I say you should just stick to gear that doesn't limit the skills of another class or it'll be too easy for ya, even on insane.
Haven't really tried thief/cleric multi and dual combos. Mainly cause the only cleric spells I like are holy smite(and even that is only cool when you're good), bolt of glory, and sunray. May try it one of these days.
All in all, thiefs are the way to go. As for skill point distro, I'd get pickpocketing up to around 110 asap (with easy to get items you'll get it high enough to steal anything and with potions you'll be all but undetectable). Don't go overboard cause if you alot above 200 there's a bug there the skill will wrap around make'n it seem like you have alot less skill in it that you really have. High 100s will do ya just fine, at around 185 i even stopped bother'n to save before hand unless i was rob'n a potion merchant blind. ;p The rest i'd put in any other skills that you'd like except for hide in shadows and move quietly. If you use it to scout you're take'n your life in your hands, and for that initial backstab you'll only use it once so no biggie if you have to try 5 times to get it to work. And later on with equip you'll get it high enough to use it on the first try and with that nifty cloak from the underdark both will be over 100 w/o you have'n to put a single point in. And thats not even counting potions (most, if not all potion merchants are pickpocket-able so don't be afraid to use potions liberally. btw, TOB potion case from Watchers Keep is a life saver). Detect traps and lockpicking are a good place to spend some points, but i wouldn't bother get'n em over 100. Items will give ya high enough over 100 in both to be able to notice/disarm/pick any lock and trap you'll come across. Btw, you can detect and disarm traps and it won't break invis, but you'll need fast fingers or liberal use of pause if you wanna do with just hide in shadows. Haven't messed with detect illusion much, but if it can take care of mirror image and mislead as fast or faster than true sight can i'd forgo get'n set traps up in favor of it.
A few final questions, any necklaces around that boost thief skills? found rings, armor, boots, capes, and gauntlets, but no necklaces...
And for those folks who go through SOA with TOB already installed, when you wear bardic chain with the Use any Item ablility, will it disable thief skills like hide in shadows and disarm traps/pickpocketing? And are there any bardic armor items that decrease casting time? Look'n for something besides that robe from the Adventures Mart that i can use with the thief/mage I have.

DaJir: And what does your thief do against a Dragon?
It seems to me that many people use one class of a dual or a multi to enhance the other class. As you state with the thief/mage or fighter/thief.
Another thing: What about those that cast true sight?
My money goes to the fighter/mage multi or the Inquisitor for solos.

Qualis Artefix Pereo
Casters that cast true sight you can backstab and kill at least one of em before they get the spell off even w/o haste and boots of speed, just use pause plot your route right. Alot easier with it tho. Against lichs that cast it your only recourse is daystar's sunray and trap cheese to kill em. As for those fishy look'n things in underdark they always use pierce'n weapons (hope you saved that girdle) and are piss poor fighters and casters to boot so no difficulty there. They are only an issue if go to Underdark at low level and are solo, (and its pretty hard to be low level AND solo, even if you try)
Dragons eh? Damn them for the invul to invis of all types so no backstab....
*takes a little time out to weep*
With pure thief, you're pretty screwed unless you either pick a tankish kit, use potions liberally (plenty of buffing potions out there to up save'n throws and resistances for breath attacks, tho w/o a potion case from Watchers Keep or prior knowledge i don't see how you could use em to their fullest) or use trap cheese (you're still SOL against dragons that start off aggro tho... nuts). And with a multi you just use strats for that class mostly.
Mage/thiefs make (over)use of wands, summons (skel warriors for duals or multis who have TOB installed and have xp cap removed), the many many spell cheese out there(feeble mind, cast'n strengh on em, ext...) and protection busting spells, not to mention scrolls (damn near all of the merchants who sell em are pickpocketable, so go nuts. ;p and those that don't cash will nev be a problem, thank god for fences)
Fighter/thiefs just potion up get good weapons/armor and pray. They may be able to make use of those green scrolls, but i've never played melee only chars before so i'm not sure.
Theif/cleric duals should have it easier with Magic reistance cheese and holy smite. Or just gate up and demon and holy smite em both for extra xp . Can't say much for extra strats for thief cleric multis since i'm a crappy cleric player at best.
For dragons i'd say avoid em if ya can at low levels cause the ones you can avoid don't drop anything you'll need item wise cept shadow dragon, and trap cheese works just fine on him.

Thieves has a perfect tool against true sighting mages: Cloak of Non-Detection.
But the mages have a perfect tool against backstabbing thieves: Stoneskin. That should be up all day (AND in contingency too).
Using Mislead to have permanent backstab is still somewhat cheese IMHO. Just like the Magi backstab trick.
Nevertheless Thieves are great, especially in ToB.

i dunno, i was pretty sure true sight ignored non-detection. i always got found out with true sight when i had the cloak of non-detection on. Even says it in the manual, but we all know how accurate that is.... So.. not sure about that.
As for mislead to have lots of backstabs, i don't think its cheese. the cheese factor comes in when you send the clone outa true sight range so it can't be dispelled. And plus, if you have all the latest patches and fixes from baldurdash installed and can still do it, i say fair game.

i don't like mages and clerics all that much. i kind of like to get in there and dish out the damage instead of casting spells. i don't like dealing with the spell protections and magic resistance every monster has so i just pound them. then again this is only my opinion and this is my first time playing bg2. right now i'm a lvl 10 fighter still in chpt 2 since there's alot to do still before i go on.
BTW, what class is the Carsomyr weapon? if it's the best weapon in the game then i'd like to put profieciency's into that class.
and also what's the best class to master in if you're just a regular fighter.

i'm gonna agree w/ Dajir on this one.
thieves.
it's not so much that they are powerful, but that there are npc's that fill all the other roles quite well.
except the backstabbing / lock / trap / scout / pickpocket guy.
i prefer elf multi ftr / thief. sneak in, backstab then fight your way out.

Currently on an extreme ego trip, using kensai, assassin sorceror.
Yes, this is possible, and for fun took an evil innate ability, hive mother beholder anti magic ray!!! Rips thru everything, including spell trap and miscasts magic for 3 rounds! I hate beholders so much I use it on them, so even hive mothers cannot imprison me.
Anyway, guys, the finest fighter combo is cleric fighter. really simple. a even mid level fighter cleric can cast righteous magic. think LONG duration kai shot plus thaco boost and adds to str, even nicer, adds to existing str, so if you're at 18 str or so, your cleric has just reached 25 witha level 25 cleric!
With staff or ram, or a recharged staff of striking, think 40 or so damage a shot! whirlwind attack, and you can, and I have, taken down dragons solo in meelee.
oh my sorc type? I actually use a sorc variant I made up called the cheeze sorc. almost every spell in the selction is a cheesy sorc spell, aside from standard offense defense. mirror image, for example, for cloudkill protection. mislead, for the cheesy mislead attacks.
by, the way, here is a way to take down almost anydragon in one round. you need 2 mages, with chain contingency and spell trigger. aerie an immie are ideal. Load up the spell trigger with lower resist, 4 of them and doom and greater malison. load up the chains with kill spells, a fav of mine is aeries tripple implosions.
move mages near dragon, resolve the dialog peacefully so it remains blue. trigger the spell triggers on the dragon, in pause, and the dragon will turn hostile which immediately triggers the chain. result, one dead dragon without a single hit!
its a career choice, being acheese sorc, but I love the sorc class too much. finsihed tob with sorc, trying out asorc fighter hybrid is so fun!!!

All the dragons in BG2 can be cheesed with traps.
Firkragg doesn't become hostile until you attack him; the black one (what's his name again?) won't attack until you drop the warding stone. ToB, of course, is another story entirely.

Reason why I hate the sucky paladin class...
I like paladins, lets make it clear. holy avenger is one kick ass sword!! I have found acombo that should work better, tho...
staff of magi in sorckensai slot one and vicious blade in other. the holy avenger is great cause of its dispell to punch thur protections, hit with staff, and second strike will get thru.
anyway, I hate paladins... not cause they are not good, but cuase in chavalier the spells only go up to level 4!! drives me nuts!!! with righteous magic, you get a damage bbost and awesome str boost at high levels, and this is a level 5 spell!!! drives me nuts...her is the best fighter class, but misses the one spell that will make him unstoppable.
gotta say the kensai mage is awesome. but you can duplicate much of the effect by using use any item, and sk.
anybody who plays sorc is doomed. no other spell casting class is ever fun again....all us sorc players have lists, Ive had over 20, with our spell selctions. this is the real fun of sorc, balancing and setting up spells. and the sorc can duplicate a fighters effects very easily. chain 2 mswords and haste for evil chop fun. a planetar with a globe of blades up will solo mind flayers...even when stunned, the globe still kills!!send in, and it shoulf get stunned near doorway, and allow you to send dragons breaths too, while the globe kills. hasted and inv skellys are the best augmented summons in the game, 4 will clear out entier mind flayer lair.

This topic is outdated but let me say, playing as an Assassin was probably the funniest I've had with all the different classes and Kits I tried. I still love playing a mage but an Assassin was great, with the HUGE backstab amount, CAN be a great thief, Poision weapon ablility, they can have a good AC when wearing the right equipment, + give him/her the clock of non-dectection
Death ****ing Blooms!
My Barbarian has 161 hit points, with 19 constitution (Dwarf) and Helm of Balduran, do you mean Berzerker Sherman?Originally posted by Sherman
What kind of HP do your Barbarians have? Mine is level 18 and has 130. This doesn't seem as high as you all make it seem. Does my Barb just suck? 18 Con btw...
