New Rule Added

Post by BuckGB »

Just wanted to let all of you know that I've added a new rule to the forum rules page:

#7 - Please don't bump multiple threads unless you have something to genuinely contribute to their contents. Nobody likes seeing hot topics on the front page of a forum shoved back several pages, simply because a member has bumped several "back page" topics for no good reason. Breaking this rule repeatedly will lead to disciplinary action.

Feel free to post any comments about the new rule.

Has this really been a problem lately? I don't peruse most of the forums here, but I haven't noticed anyone going on a bumping spree in a while.

Yes, there have been issues lately with many topics being pushed to the second page or beyond, simply because a member wanted his or her older posts to resurface. This rule is designed to curb any abuse of such "bumping".

Hrm....well I certainly hope posting sports news in my sports thread everyday and occasionally posting lyrics and recently-seen music videos hasnt been and will not be a problem. I progressively post that as I see them. I dont collect the info and post it in one huge post...

But other then that...if its just a post like "Bump" or "I was bored" or "LOL-at something 5 months ago" then, yeah, its a good idea. Ive known other forums that have implemented a similar rule.

In other words, if the rule is implemented because people are bumping threads purely to:
1-bump threads
2-be annoying
3-increase post count

Then I agree 100%

But if the person bumps threads to add an idea or thought, even if it may not be a popular topic, but the idea or thought is constructive, then I think that should be accepted as positive behavior.

Thats just what I think, plain and simple.
“Caw, Caw!” The call of the wild calls you. Are you listening? Do you dare challenge their power? Do you dare invade? Nature will always triumph in the end.

Just one little question.

Will this also affect this thread: Free charity?
I hope not, since this is the most important thread in the entire SYM.

I can see your point of just typing "bump", but what else can be said about it? I think Vicsun explained it all good in the first post.

There's a difference between bumping a thread because you have something constructive to add to it and bumping a bunch of threads just to see your name up and down the forum.

I think as long as we go with the "use common sense" thing, this will be fine.

@ Oki and Ty, I have no problems with the specific examples you mentioned, nor do I think Mah or Fable do. It's the incessant bumping of 5 or 6 threads from a year and a half ago, all at once with nothing more posted than a lol thats annoying people. That or people who try to get their name as last poster on every thread on the page.

I'd like to add that we even had an incident a few weeks back where one member decided for kicks to push back every thread on page 1 to page 2, bumping the last threads on the back page.

Then, we had another, more recent occurence, where a member complained in PMs to me that SYM was for spam, and not "those boring Iraq threads" (direct quote). When he didn't get satisfaction (I told him there seemed to be a good mix, and we got some complaints from both sides), he tried to bump up every one of his old spam threads, including several that hadn't been posted to in over half a year.

So it can be a problem--though hopefully, not a big one.

If its important, then a mod should "sticky" it.

I've made a request that it becomes a sticky, but since at the time there were some complaints that there were too many stickies, mods deceided it's better if it stays non-sticky.
