Weird Error Message when starting POR

Post by TheFanatic »

I had a windows 98 machine that crapped out recently, so I picked up a rockin new laptop with Windows XP. I loaded POR on it even though it was only for 95/98. It loaded fine and I brought in my saved game file from the 98 machine and played for a while. The next time I logged in I got the following error message: There was an error initializing DirectInput.

DirectInput is in the DirectX folder, so I went the the DirectX website and downloaded the latest version of DirectX and was on my way again. I played for a couple days and then the exact same error message pops up as the game starts to load and then it shuts the game down. Is there a fix for this? Is there a patch I need to run properly in XP?

Welcome to the GB forums @TheFanatic

Well, i know that the game has a serious compatibility issue with winXP. It seems that the game does not support XP, and all i can suggest, once more, is to try out the Technical Support forum for the game, for some workarounds/feedback about this issue.

Thanks, but I'm not new. I was on here before, just not in a while. I took a job last year in IT and pretty much didn't want to look at a PC when I got home so I haven't played in a while. Besides, playing the game on my old system was painfully slow (566 AMD K6 with 128 MB and only an 8MB video card), so when I got this new laptop (2.4 P4, 512 MB, 32 MB video card), I decided to reload the game. It flies now. I love it. But I couldn't remember my log in or password, so I just started over. I use TheFanatic just about everywhere now.

As for my problem, I put it in compatibility mode and I got into the game, but haven't had a chance to play it yet since I'm still at work. A forum about the game looks almost like work, but playing the game definitely doesn't. Thanks for the input. I appreciate the help....

Wish me luck, I'm off to the catacombs....
