I've just started a new game of BGII, it's really my first real game since I installed XP. I've tinkered with things here and there, but this is the first time I've followed the story, you know...
So I'm still in Athkatla, I'm about to do Nalia's quest, and only her and Viconia are in my party. I'm heading to the slums to take the Harpers a dying man (I forget his name, you know the one), but if I try to change areas it crashes all over me.
It's been doing it on multi-player and single player games, but now it's every time I try to change.
If any of that makes sense, maybe you can help.

well, do you get any errors or does it just shut down?
bg2 does have lots of problems with xp. Does your entire pc crash?
Did you cheat some stuff with shadowkeeper? those savegames have an annoying tendency to shut down bg2 when changing areas :/
you could also try to patch just soa, not sure if that matters though.
If all that doesn't work, uninstall and install it again

If you have ToB, I think you're told NOT to install any SoA-only patches as this might interfere with ToB. ToB includes the official SoA patch, IIRC; so if you have SoA installed, ToB is installed to "patch" SoA, and then you have to install both the official ToB patch and Baldurdash patch. (Well, Baldurdash's isn't critical, I guess, but a good idea.)
As for area-crashing, I didn't have that happen to me on WinXP ... hmmm.. but I don't have it installed right now so I can't test anything. Perhaps a full uninstall/reinstall? .. Sorry

It was a ToB patch, apparently to fix a lot of faults with XP. It usually suggests an error report, and sometimes it bluescreens.
I put the item upgrade mod in, now that you mention it (I'm using an improved ring of protection), and the multiple strongholds, which I think I'm going to take out (I was just checking it out
).
I'll just persevere and tweak now and again. It's loading about two areas every time I play, so I'll just make the most of them.

IIRC Baldurdash has a patch for XP users.... could be some place else, I would try baldurdash anyway.

jerubal is your computer restarting? Are you using onboard sound? I had a problem where I was using the onboard sound with my motherboard and it was causing BGII to restart all the time. Particularly around those areas you described. Downloading the latest drivers for the sound worked for me. There's a post in the official bioware forum about it. This was a problem for many users for a while.
