cool bug in waukeens promenade
I found a bug that can help build experience and gold in the den of the seven vales. If you send one character to the second floor and have them engage the characters there in battle and quickly run downstairs again one or more of the enemies will follow you downstairs. Kill them for the experience and take there belongings. Then the bug comes into play because you can keep going upstairs and all the characters keep regenerating, so whoever you kill downstairs wil be back in the room upstairs when you go back. If you are patient you can build a nice purse by selling off all the magic weapons and also get a couple nice levels in the process !!!!!
might as well use sk to get the experiance and money
Ancient times they had no statistics so they had to fall back on lies
"I'm invinceable"
"your a loony"
I'd rather be rich than stupid.
If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

Cool..
I never ran into that one. It would be particularly nice to get multiple copies of the Cloak of Non-detection, though it will tend to be Mencar, Smaeluv and Brennan that would pull out easily.
As to the SK comment - well, you could apply that argument to the entire game - reductio ad absurbdum applies here, I think.

????????????????????
I thought that it was the evil mage in the room that kept summoning those X#$%^&%$ fighters so early in the game to kick my but.
(Usually go to the den for a rest and a little R&R right after I get out of the dungeon. )
Only ever got to kill the mage and get the cloak once. I was always ticked off that there was never any really good loot after killing off an endless stream of baddies
Say it aint SO

Why? Based on my own experience, the Cloak of Protection does absolutely nothing but take up space.Originally posted by nephtu

I disagree. But in any case, a better analogy would be, "You might as well use the CLUA console command to create monster after monster."Originally posted by nephtu

It does come in handy when dealing with liches, but then again there are better cloaks to fill that inventory space with.....Originally posted by VonDondu

Re: Re: Cool..
Perhaps I'm missing something, VonDondu - the cloak enabled me to have my party's stealth character hang around/sneak past true-sighted enemies (except, of course, those like liches with innate true sight) without being detected. Is there some other easy way? Or is that an ability you never found relevant? I'm curious, as I've found it quite convenient.
The essence of my second point was that, IMAO, the objection that you could just use SK - or CLUA console, for that matter - to obtain money, experience, and items is true of (virtually) the entire game, except for a few trigger events. Doing so, would, I think, be fairly clearly silly. It seems to me that the only reasons to use such abilities are:
1) Items and abilities which you are unable to obtain
2) Fascination with the hacking/cheese itself - finding out just HOW massively you can break the game.
Please let me know your thoughts - I'm interested.

@ VonDondu:
the cloack of non-detection is one of the most useful items imho. a hidden in shadows stalker or thief will not be detected by true sight, thus being able to backstab enemy mages to chunky death (literally).
a mage holding a staff of the magi and wearing the cloack will not be reveled either. now, it's up to you if you want to abuse it by re-equipping the staf...
i sure'd like to have an extra cloak, or for that matter any other items that gives non-detection, other than Harpers Pin

My point about the Cloak of Non-Detection is that it doesn't seem to do what it's supposed to do. For example, True Sight will reveal an invisible or hidden character even if he's wearing the Cloak of Non-Detection. I think the same is true for a Mage who's wielding the Staff of the Magi. In other words, the cloak doesn't work. My characters can use stealth (and get caught!) without it. So what good is it? If it did what it's supposed to do, it would indeed be a useful item.
As for whether exploiting a bug is the same thing as using SK to give your characters experience and items, I simply think it's not the same thing.
But if you do exploit a bug like that or use the CLUA console to create monsters for you to fight just so you can build up your character, I would argue that you're not really playing the game; all you are doing is playing inside an "arena" that you created. If you then go back and play the game the way it was intended with your "artificially boosted" characters, then it's cheating. But I don't really care if people do that. It's their game.

Wow, that's odd. I've never tried it with spell/Staff of the Magi based invis, but I've had stealth characters (Yoshimo, Jan, Valygar) stand right next to true - sighted characters and not get detected - I'll go experiment a bit
Exploiting respawn bugs is, to me, a bit less of a cheat than CLUA-ing stuff in - but that is an opinion and of no real import anyway.
*Edit* - Ok, I went & tried it out on Trenor & co. in the Sewers under the Temple district: Stealth skill + cloak meant no detection, Invisibility or Sanctuary would be dispelled. So, the cloak works - but, it seems, only for Rogues & Rangers.*End Edit*

But does True Sight ever work against rogues? The spell description says it dispells illusion/invisibility.
It seems to me that I've had the cloak work properly, but I might be thinking of BG1. There are few times when I find it useful to go invisible against mages, so I usually do not use the cloak.

VonDondu:
The cloak does work with hide in shadows/non-detection. My thief uses it all the time in every BGII game. I've used hide in shadows with the cloak and waltzed through the improved guarded compound, with Stallman's True Sight active.
Personally I'd love a second copy of the cloak. Me and Jan both invisible ...double backstab.!!

Hmm, in that case, I'll have to try using the Cloak again. (I haven't played BG2 in over a year.) Thanks for the advice!
If you have not played for a while go to wes wiemers web site and down load a few of the upgrades.
Tactics
ascension
ease of use
50th level
item upgrade
all good

"50th level spells is okay if you want to make your fighters superfluous after a while"
actually all bg2 spells are level capped at level 20, unless you install spell 40....
cloak+hide in shadows=immune to true sight....
its actually funny...
spell immunity divination+impr inv= can be broken by high enough detect traps ability....
so good thief skills can actually beat magics...
oh and btw...
fable discovered this bit of cheese...
even if a fighter is not invisible, wearing the cloak will make creatures scripted to true sight continuously cast the spell, giving you a slight edge....

You are correct
high level mages are superfluous..dispell, breach and attack with a fighter. high level fighters have saving rolls that are so low as to negate the vaule of the mage. A belt and a potion or two for a good fighter and the mage is history just my two bits
