A Salvadoran in Miami wants to buy some new socks, but he doesn’t speak English. He goes to a department store and asks a clerk, “Quiero comprar calcetines, por favor.”
The person at the department store doesn’t speak Spanish. “I’m sorry. What do you want?”
“Calcetines.”
She holds up a shirt, “Do you mean a shirt?”
“No. Esso es una camiseta. Quiero calcetines.”
She holds up a pair of pants, “Pants?”
“Son pantalones. Quiero calcetines.”
“Shoes?”
“Zapatos.”
“A tie?”
“Corbata.”
Finally, she holds up a pair of socks.
“¡Esso sí que es!” he exclaims jubilantly.
“Well! If you could spell it all along, why didn’t you say so?”
