Cult Demon
Cult Demon
I am having some serious trouble killing the Ac'Latec (spelling?) in Ulgoth's Beard after Durlag's Tower. It just keeps coming and coming and turns my party into Ghasts and there seems to be nothing I can do about it. Any tips? I am out of ideas.
Potions of mirroring are pretty good defense, as are protection from magic. Everyone else should be hasted (as usual
). Have fireball, or potions of exploding to deal with the cultists enmasse. Then hack the demon and hope for the best. I managed to beat him without much strategy and A LOT of luck the last time I played
"It's not whether you get knocked down, it's if you get back up."
Some thoughts
I think the best approach is to keep the demon busy with summons while you focus on killing the cultists.
1) Go in heavily buffed, and first thing get all the summons you can on the demon to keep it busy.
2) Take out the cultists as fast as possible while the demon shreds those lucky summons. Resummon as needed.
3) Knock the tar out of the demon
All the while you do need to keep an eye out for the "dying" symbol (looks like a cobra to me) on your characters - if they get that, they need to be dispelled. Neglect that, and the character will turn into a ghast (and be unrezzable)
Good luck!

Potions of Mirrored eyes.
Potions of invisibility for your thief
Staff of striking.
When you enter and your whole party has drunk mirrored eyes, kill the mage, then with your party kill the cultist while skeletons and monsters keep the demon busy.
At first you can use your thief to kill some cultists, but after a while when most of the cultists are dead, start stabbing the Demon with the staff.
After a few atempts, he will be dead.

That's it!
Yes, the demon will posess a random surviving cultist if slain. That (along with party members dying and turning into ghasts) was a VERY unpleasant surprise the first time around - I'd focused on Killing it, ignoring the cultists, as I thought they'd be easy to mop up after.
Boy, was I mistaken

aaah thanks everyone. I didn't realise I had to take out the cultists first. After reading your posts though I am assuming they are the ones responsible for the demon being raised repeatedly after it dies?![]()
Thanks again![]()
Could you post your fight if you've slain the Demon? I'm curious

Yeah, I won quite eaily after the above suggestions (potion of mirrored eyes, kill the cultists first).
I used my mage (drank mirrored eyes potion) to go down first, innitiate dialoge with the preistess, then drank a potion of invisibility and went out of the demon's view and cast stinking cloud spells aorund the room (the 5th level spell not the 2nd level spell). Sorry if I mixed up their names - The orange one not the green one -
This killed all the cultists (I had to finnish 1 or 2 off with magic missiles, remaining out of the demon's view). After that I used wand of summoning to summon as many monsters as I possibly could before the demon attacked (once again I started out of its view, but eventually it will see one of the monsters and attack). When it attacks I sent down the rest of my party (buffed up on everything I had including mirrored eyes) and attacked the demon with long ranged weapons (as it was surrounded by about 50 monsters). When there was an opening I sent my tanks to do some extra melee damage.
The poor bastard didn't stand a chance

nice one
unfortunately, the demon was something of an anticlimax for me. I somehow managed to paralyze the demon - I think using chromatic orb - at the very start of the battle, took down the cultists very easily, and attacked the demon. It got one standard attack off against me - which missed - before dying...
I'm still a bit miffed that I missed one of the best fights in the game...

Well, in case ye all don't mind, I thought I'd share my account of my fight with that demon with ye.

Well, my party was: (Levels could be sketchy; been a few busy weeks)
Lvl 7 Paladin (18/96 Str, 17 Dex, 19 Con, 11 Int, 16 Wis, 19 Cha)
Khalid Lvl 7
Minsc Lvl 6
Jaheira Lvl 6 Fighter Lvl 7 Druid
Imoen Lvl 7
Dynaheir Lvl 7
I pumped my guys with buffs, haste and Prot. from Magic scrolls (lesser globe of invul. for Dyna)
Imoen had Arrows of Biting (for the cultists) and Dispelling (for hold/dying).
My PC and Dynawent after the female cultist who initiated dialogue. The Paladin was armed with the +2 Warhammer, and Dyna with a +1 sling and bullets. Jaheira (armed with +2 Scimitar) and Imoen (Eagle Bow, Arrows of Biting) went for the cultist on the left. Minsc (Spider's Bane) and Khalid (+2 Longsword) went after the cultist on the right.
Dynaheir repeated pumped out summons (via a wand) to distract the demon, and some explosions helped soften up the cultists. After a while, my guys (and gals) started to pound the hostless demon's rear with all we had, all the while making sure no-one was held or "dying". It made my heart pump like a plunger in a clogged drain, but in the end (though on easy difficulty, not Core Rules), I got one dead demon, the end of Durlag's Tower, and the ease of a couple week's frustration. Thank goodness for Arrows of Dispelling, and alot of other stuff I utilized! The rest of the game practically was a sinch.
Well, happy hunting, peeps! Oh, and if you smell Brimstone, run.
