Matrix Theory?

Post by Gorgan »

I'm not sure if this has ben discussed before, but who cares :D I have lately been thinking about the whole matrix thing and came up with a theory. It is slightly altered and less far-fetched.

What if what we dont sense isnt really their. When we do sense it we are just enterpreting what we sense with our brain. For example, when we arent looking at something, lets say the wall behind you, is it still there or more like raw data unenterpreted by our brain. It goes for every single one of our senses. Its just like the tree thing where if it falls and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?

It seems like a pretty exotic idea, but waht if it is true. What if things arent truly there and are just raw data waiting to be enterpreted by our brain as an object.

What do all of you think about this idea? If you need it i can explain it better or give a better example. Just wondering guys.
Thanks in advance for your replies

What if your post doesn't really say what you thought it said when you were typing it? What if my brain processed everything into a totally different topic, like "Free Beer on Thursday" :D

But I get where your coming from, what if all we truly experience is not pure but tainted by exterior forces such as what we believe we should percieve something as, or what we think sociaty as a whole has indoctinated our minds to percieve.
perhaps we can only regain touch with reality by focusing inward and manipulating our own senses to pierce the veil. Seek knowledge, search out your Be.

You get used to the stares and snickers after awhile :D But then agin, they cannot see what is hidden from them due to forces corrupting their perception.

It is a heavy burden indeed to be so enlightened, as I know all to well :( :D

As a philosophy student who is also studying a bit of psychology, I feel reasonably qualified to answer this.

Yes. :D ;) :p

Serious answers coming later, provided people want them and don't want what has the potential to become a good debate to be finished before it takes off.

First, what is 'raw data' exactly?

What I believe happens in the real world is that objects have an existance and character independant of our perception of them, and data which is inherent in the objects, and then transmitted to us and interpretted by the brain whenever we 'sense' the object (with sight, hearing, touch etc).

If the object does not exist at all outside our perception of it, what do you think it could be that shapes our sensory experiences? If there is nothing to look at, then what is it that composes the experience of a sight in our minds?

And anyone who says its a plug in our heads takes a slap.

I think a better question is: if a tree falls and no one is around to hear it, does anybody care? :D

Better still, if a tree falls and hits a mimeImage, and there's no-one around to witness it, does anyone care?

EDIT-DAMN YOU @AEGIS!  ;)

Ah, but my scenario didn't involve a mime. :p That was Aegis'. Oh, and yours too. Losing that speed-spam skill, eh?

Besides, mimes don't have feelings, do they? :D

Your grasp of the obvious is amazing. :D Yep, and not particularly hassled over it, either.

I've never heard one complaining... :D :p

Well, we're yet unsure as to what diabolical forces are at work within mimes, so we don't know. :D
