Now I think it's time to get a serious point across

Post by Galuf the Dwarf »

I think I have a confession to make, something that many of you could have realized. For now, I feel I have to cut the comedy for a moment and get this said.

I admit that the interaction I have on this board is something that really makes me feel alive and kicking. I'm not trying to annoy anyone with the rampant amount of posts I make, with concepts that not many grasp. I just have a severe need to reach out to people, to see where I stand as a human being with my ideas and humor. Something just feels absent when I don't get any bit of a good reply. *"Dream On" by Aerosmith playing on my Walkman as I write this, setting the mood*

Sure, maybe when I really get out in college this shouldn't be as much of a problem. I just see a bunch of socially vibrant individuals in here. It's not that I don't notice you all have the time and input for all I dole out. It's just that I still ponder the different amount of bulletin boards it would take to find the right people to truly understand ALL I have to say. All I'm looking for in this thread is a confirmation of what I'm seeing: the truth of what I've found - when I communicate ideas, I have to expect to not fully be heard/noticed. If such is true, I've known this for much of my social life.

This is just out of respect for all out there. I realize you don't always have to give me attention, and I'm trying to respect your wishes.

I think the fact that you have posted this is telling in the fact that you want to tell people who you are and what you're like. It doesn't matter if you're excitable, a very quick poster, Gamebanshee will generally accept you. People here don't make judgements on first impression. We wait to see how you are - admittedly, I've not really gotten to know you, but over time, I'm sure you'll speak with more people and settle in.

Damn typo's. :o

No offence intended, but I don't really see what point you're trying to make here. If you're worried that people are getting annoyed because you're making a lot of posts, then don't be-you should have seen some of the spamming sprees that we've had before.
The Great Avatar Theft of '02 springs to mind, as does Georgi and my (amongst many others :D ) sparring/flirting, or the glory days of the Rolling Thunder when no tavern thread was safe from being hijacked...ahhh, memories.
Anyway, I've gotten off track. Basically, just don't worry yourself. If I've missed your point entirely, then still don't worry about it: you'll live longer if you're less stressed and not get so many wrinkles. ;)
As far as understanding goes, most people here are pretty smart and if they don't get what you're saying they'll probably ask you to explain what you mean. Once again, don't worry.

Tch, dwarves. Always stressing about something. :p

EDIT-Looks like Nippy beat me to it. Ah, well, it's still good advice, just like "Go to a tavern thread and drink lots."

Don't worry, lad. You're doing just fine as long you're not breaking any forum rules :) If you think you've gone rampant, you should check out BS post counts :D

As Nipples & Ol' Hurmit aka Ode stated "No worries" (copyright by Beldin) Buck especially create SYM to contain some rants, jokes and sometimes serious discussion. I admit it was "the old generation sin" for "spamming" Baldur's Gate forum back in the old days which trigger the genesis of SYM :o

Like Nippy, I have not gotten to know you as of yet (my RL circumstances have been a bit crazy over the last couple of weeks ;) ), but I have been reading your posts. You seem like a really great guy; a very honest and sensitive person.

From what I have seen people enjoy interacting with you as well :) . So don't worry ;) You might not always get quite the responses that you are hoping for, but that is the nature of SYM, sometimes people tend to be in much more of a spam mode than in a serious sort of frame. I think this has been more the case recently because for a while things around here were quite somber.

But, as I said, don't worry, SYM is a very accepting and open-minded place :)

Besides, just wait 'til Fas starts hug-hunting. :p
Now there's spam for you!

Try looking up the word 'spam' on the search function, that should show you how little you have to worry about with regards to posting too much...
The search might take a while though... :D

Awww...........*HUG*...You worry too much. I have read a lot of your posts.....you are very warm and funny. I am glad you decided to come to SYM. Humor is always good, but you are bright and insightful as well. I hope you will be happy here. As several thers have said, don't worry about spam or not to Spam, If that were an issue in SYM, I would have been banned a year ago :D ;) But I would not classify most of your posts as Spam. If it is related to the conversation, and on topic, and adds to the thread...it is always welcome here. The Tavern threads...they are like hanging out with friends and talking. Some threads are serious, and sort of fall between debate and discussion. The command a bit more respect...but you get the feel when you read them. Basically, you get the 'feel' of a thread, like getting the 'feel of a room at a party, and just go with it. You do not have to respond to anything if you do not want to, but if you do, I am sure you will find your imput is valued and welcome. Sometimes people miss things..the board moves fast....if you are trying to communicate with a particular person, and you feel they may have missed it......you can send them a PM......BTW, you have one in your box. ;)

Just relax and have fun....you have made a friend here :)

Keep in mind that I tend to be a bit blunt, if not abrasive, so don’t take this the wrong way: but what are you trying to say here?

Are you complaining that people don’t seem to get you? That you don’t get the feedback you think you should? Keep in mind that posting to a message board is not exactly like a normal conversation. It really is a narcissistic activity. You can't expect to come here and hold court; most people want a bit more interaction. Everyone appreciates the attention of others, some small bit of validation - and it must go both ways.

I’ve always felt that if I had something important or profound to say [and sorry, folks, I wouldn’t normally post such a thing on this message board] and it didn’t get a response that it was fundamentally my own fault. Why? Perhaps it wasn’t clear enough. Not engaging enough. Or perhaps it wasn’t as profound as I thought. We are all just 10 point white Verdena* here. It is you who determines how you will be received.

Waverly is right. Relations on a BBS is much different then vocal, in that if you say something, someone doesn't have to respond. There have been many people who have been victim to circumstances like this in the past, even on these boards. This is partially because of a clique-esqe division thats been created here. I believe it's also the partial cause to certain members leaving, or even becoming frustrated enough, that they slip, and do something to become banned.

What is a 'good reply' to a post?

If it is a reply complimenting you for making the post, you are in the wrong place. If people cannot understand your ideas then maybe the fault is that you are not communicating them properly.
If people just do not appreciate your posts as much as you think they should then no ammount of explanation or self-validation will make them more appreciative.
If you think that people do not pay enough attention to you, then you are missing the point of the board - here, nobody has to pay any attention to anything, and there are no rules at all to make people care when one says something...
So the only point is interaction - a web board is the purest way to give and receive views with everything else stripped away.

In short, here is a bad place to be if you require the unconditional positive approval or attention of others - because without any real life factors, the only way to gain them is to write good posts.

I don't know if it's so much tolerance. Being one of the original members, I've seen SYM, and in fact GB's progression, and it seems more of a tolerance out of cliques. Until the new member finds themselves in one of these cliques, they are usually ignored. IMHO, and I know this isn't a general fault of an individual, these forums have become somewhat of an elitest group.

It wouldn't take long for a new member to be accepted. All they've got to do is to sort out the babble that goes around and somehow join in. :D
I've gotten this "elitest group" feeling too. Sometimes its a "see-who-replies-first-before-I-reply" kinda thing.

I don't think it's cliques so much as people who tend to be online at the same sort of time because of time zones etc get to know each other better.

And yes, sometimes you post stuff and nobody replies. Move on. Go to the pub or something. :D It's nothing personal, you know.

Aha! I feel a bit better now. It just feels a little different being around my folks alot (too much of the same people). Working at Wal-Mart really felt like putting on a new pair of shoes for me. Different people, more good work done. Really felt like fun to me.

By the way, Scayde, I replied to your PM. ;)
